McDowell wrecks Mikey at Watkins Glen by Kellyanne Lynch
10 August 2008
Aggressive driving from his rookie driver cost Michael Waltrip and others a solid finish in the Centurion Boats At The Glen, today's Sprint Cup race in New York. With less than ten laps to go, Michael McDowell was beating and banging with David Gilliland when he ran Gilliland's #38 into the outside retaining wall. Gilliland ricochetted off the wall and knocked into Mikey's #55 Napa Auto Parts Camry, breaking the radiator. McDowell's #00 Champion Morgage Toyota finished 25th after the incident while his car owner came out of the garage after the white flag and came home seven laps down in 39th. MWR's sophomore driver David Reutimann was able to weave his way through McDowell's accident scene; his #44 UPS machine crossed the stripe one lap down in 33rd.
Because qualifying was rained out on Friday, the starting order was set according to owner point standings. Kyle Busch inheritted the pole, and Michael Waltrip Racing would start 26th (David), 34th (McDowell), and 43rd (Mikey). The #55 was at the rear due to an engine change yesterday.
"How about a radio check? You guys got me?" someone asked at 2:07pm ET.
"This is the spotter up in the chicane. I got ya," someone else replied.
"You're the spotter in the chicane?"
"Up in the bus stop."
"Testing 1, 2, 3. Hello?" Mikey was on the radio moments later.
"Got you loud and clear," crew chief Bobby Kennedy replied.
"Okay. No changes except the engine yesterday?"
"That would be correct. We're looking lap 24, 25." Bobby said he'd gauge their stop on the leaders so they wouldn't get lapped.
"Well, just, there's probably a time, it's probably just a math equation, the time you can pit in all these laps. Probably got to be within 30 seconds of the leader, I guess."
Bobby said they wouldn't put themselves in a position to get lapped their first pit stop.
"All right," Mikey replied. "I'm going to wait to start it for a second, to save some gas and to get a better reading on the first stop."
"10-4."
"Hey, you got a copy in the back? Michael, am I clear?" Ty asked after static.
"You're clear, and he isn't," Mikey replied. He said it would probably be reversed once he got to the backstretch. "But if y'all can hear each other clearly, just communicate and tell me what you need to."
Somebody told secondary spotter Dave to put the microphone closer to his mouth.
"3500 first gear, 3500 first gear will be our pit road deal," Bobby told his driver, regarding pit road speed. "I will remind you the first gear. Ty, first gear."
"10-4," Ty replied. "Hey, Michael?"
"Uh huh?" Mikey replied.
"Directly to your left, you'll see those cones against the fence. It's a little later restart point." Ty warned Mikey of the late restart jamming up people yesterday in the Nationwide series race.
"Okay. That's good news. I mean, good info."
"They're finally rolling," Ty told his driver.
"You need to check that, when we go through the chicane, that we're not losing any gas, spotter," Mikey said after rolling off pit road.
"Okay," Dave replied.
"See anything on that straightaway, Michael? Is it not 3500 and first gear?" Ty asked.
"The pace car can't get me nowhere near 3500 and first gear, but I'll go with y'all on that."
"10-4. Hey, Auto, put the scan on and see what some of those other guys get," Bobby told Mikey he was in the second stall in on pit road, after the #21 of Marcos Ambrose. The #00 and #44 would be in front of the #55 box.
"All right, next time around, they're coming to the green," Ty announced.
Bobby reminded Mikey to get heat in the brakes. "Keep her on the hard top there. Have a good day, bud. Keep after them."
"Will do," Mikey replied. "Will do."
Ty warned Mikey about Ambrose coming around in front of him.
"Hey, Bobby, just for your info, Fellows has first gear to race with, as does the 21," Mikey reported.
Bobby said he noticed in the garage area. "10-4. That's good info. Always good info."
"21 looks like he almost has a higher first gear than me, but he's struggling right now to get around."
"Yeah, 10-4, he struggled at the start of the race here on pit road."
"Could he have a higher first, or is mine high?"
"You could have higher. That's not mandated by NASCAR. Everything is wide open here."
"All right, bud. Have a good one. Coming to the green," Ty told his driver. "Pace car's off. Green green green. Everybody's straight, everybody's straight. Outside. Still both sides. Clear up, clear up. Clear low, clear low. Got one outside to your left. All clear, bud. Nice job."
Kyle Busch led the field to the green flag at 2:22pm. Mikey was last, David 26th, and McDowell 34th. One lap into the run, Mikey picked up 38th. David was 29th, and McDowell was 30th. Dale Earnhardt Jr took the lead going into lap 3.
"Still out there. Still there, on your left corner," Ty warned. "Clear all clear. Be clear two back to the 45. That 45's going to get a run on the bottom. Inside by himself. One back behind him, the 21. One's there, inside. The 21. Going to be clear behind the 21, five back."
Lap 3 saw Mikey in 37th; he was in front of Boris Said's #45.
"Clear two back. Clear five back."
"15.60."
"Spin right in front of you. Stay low, stay low. No caution, no caution. Not going to be a caution yet. Doesn't look like it. Keep rolling."
On lap 4, David smoked getting into the corner, wheel hopped, and spun out. The race remained green. David fell to last. Mikey was 37th; he had passed David, but Said passed him.
"15.60."
"Still there, still there. Clear clear," Ty said.
On lap 6, Mikey was 36th. David was still last, and McDowell was 25th.
"15 flat, 15 flat," Bobby noted. "14.80, 14.80.
"14.75, 75."
McDowell picked up 24th on lap 9.
"15.20, 15.20," Bobby read off Mikey's lap time. "15.50, 15.50.
"15.05, 05."
"Still out there," Ty observed. "Still there. Still outside. You're clear two back to the 7. Clear, clear. Clear one back to the 7."
Mikey picked up 35th from Aric Almirola on lap 12.
"Two back to the 7. Nice job," Ty praised.
"7's in your mirror there, Michael," Dave warned.
"Clear behind him. Clear five back."
On lap 13, Mikey was 36th; Robby Gordon's #7 had passed.
"I could use a little forward bite," Mikey reported on lap 14.
"10-4," Bobby responded. "14.40. Good lap. 14.40.
"14.90. I'll make a air pressure adjustment in your rear tire. That's the same complaint most guys have."
"I told y'all. I did not run off the road," Mikey stated.
"10-4."
"The two and the pit down there. Yeah, keep rolling. Yeah, keep rolling. No caution."
Said turned Patrick Carpentier into PJ Jones, spinning Carpentier and Jones on lap 17. Racing continued. AJ Allmendinger made a scheduled stop. Mikey was 22nd. David was 42nd after Allmendinger's stop. McDowell was 23rd.
"14.40, 14.40. Good lap," Bobby praised.
On lap 19, McDowell picked up 22nd. David moved up to 41st when Scott Riggs dropped back.
"14.75, 14.75."
Reed Sorenson spun but kept going on lap 20. David gained 40th as a result.
"220, 260," Mikey read off temps.
"10-4, 10-4," Bobby acknowledged. "14.50, 14.50."
At the end of lap 20, Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle pit for regularly scheduled stops. Others followed suit. Mikey was 31st on lap 21, and McDowell was 20th.
"14.40, 14.40."
"That's lap 20 right there, Michael," Ty noted. "Lap 20."
On lap 22, Mikey was up to 28th. McDowell was 18th, and David was 39th. As stops continued, the #55 picked up 25th, the #00 14th, and the #44 37th.
"14.20. Good lap."
Mikey was 22nd on lap 24. McDowell was 12th, and David was 35th.
"14.40, 14.40."
One lap later, Mikey was 18th, McDowell 9th, and David 35th.
"14.90, 14.90."
"You're clear ten back to the 18. He's already pitted," Ty warned.
"Ty, we're going to have to wait for the leaders. We're too far behind to pit. 10-4," Bobby stated.
"Don't get me lapped," Mikey said.
"Four back to the 18. four back," Dave warned.
"One back to the 18. He's inside, inside. Clear behind him."
Mikey was 16th on lap 26. McDowell was 7th, and David was 30th. McDowell lost a spot one lap around the track.
"Ty, when the 88 pits, we're pitting," Bobby said.
Ty noted that Dale Earnhardt Jr in the #88 was the only front runner who hadn't pit yet.
Mikey was 7th on lap 28. McDowell went to pit road.
"The 88 did not pit, Bobby," Ty stated.
"10-4, 10-4. We're not pitting. I think he's coming this time. If he comes, we come. Be ready, guys," Bobby said.
"Clear twenty back, clear twenty back."
"Better front grip too," Mikey requested.
"10-4, 10-4," Bobby said.
"88 stayed out," Ty noted. "The 88's going to be coming next time. Do you want to come now?"
"No," Mikey replied.
Ty again said that Earnhardt Jr was about to pit.
"No, we wait 'til he comes!" Mikey exclaimed.
"No, he's got to be on pit road. We can't take a chance."
Ty acknowledged and said Mikey was clear five back.
The #55 was 5th on lap 29.
"We'll pit this time, pit this time," Bobby said as Earnhardt Jr went to pit road. "This time, Ty. This time."
"10-4, 10-4. All right, Bobby, 3500 and first. Left side. You're coming this time. 3500 and first, 3500 and first at the cone."
"First gear. 3500. Second stall in, second stall in. Right here, right here. Wheels straight, put on the brakes. Just remember to keep the RPMs revved up when we go to the other side. Be ready to push, guys. Keep it revved up, bud. Keep it revved up. Go go go go go."
"3500, 3500, 3500."
"First gear, 35."
Mikey pit on lap 30 with Earnhardt Jr.
"3500 to the coner. Just haul ass off of there. Clear twenty back. Michael, the leader's the 18, just now getting into Turn 1," Ty informed his driver.
Kyle Busch led lap 31. Mikey was 35th, David 42nd and lapped, and McDowell 24th.
"All right, bud, clear four back to the 6. Leader's at the line now," Ty said.
"14.40, 14.40," Bobby read off lap times.
Mikey was 34th on lap 33. McDowell lost a spot.
"14.40, 14.40. Leader 13.40."
On lap 34, McDowell passed Brian Vickers for 24th.
"14.60, 60."
"All right, bud. Still clear two back," Ty told his driver.
David picked up 41st from Travis Kvapil on lap 35.
"14.10, 14.10.
"14.10, 14.10. Your last two laps have been your fastest of the race."
"Looking driver's right, driver's right," Dave warned. On lap 37, David Ragan's #6 passed the #55. "Clear five back to the 8, five back."
"Leader's at the line... now," Ty observed.
"14.60, 14.60."
"One back, one back," Ty warned. "Right there. Looking inside, inside by himself. Clear three back behind him."
Almirola passed on lap 39, moving Mikey back to 36th.
"Good job, buddy! Clear four back to the 78."
"14.40, 14.40."
"You made my front worse and my back no better," Mikey commented on lap 42. McDowell was now 23rd.
"10-4, 10-4.
"14.70, 14.70.
"14.50."
"You might have made both ends worse," Mikey added on lap 44. McDowell was now 22nd, and David was 42nd.
"10-4. 10-4. Got you, bud.
"14.75, 75."
"... The 96," Ty said through static. On lap 45, Mikey picked up 35th from PJ Jones in the #96.
"14.70."
"Leader's at the line now."
"96 to driver's right, driver's right," Dave warned. "Clear by ten behind him."
"77's off in the gravel pit, but he's still rolling, still rolling. Going to be clear when you get here. It's all clear, all clear," Ty noted.
Mikey was 36th on lap 48; Jones had gotten back around him.
"Caution's going to be out, caution's going to be out," Ty told his driver.
The first caution was for debris from Hornish Jr on lap 48. Joe Nemechek received the free pass.
"All right, get caught up here," Bobby told his driver. He said he'd make an adjustment on the splitter and rear shocks. "Five clicks, five clicks, just go five clicks on the rear shocks. Take your time when you get here, get everything done. We'll do the tires, guys, four tires, and then we'll adjust the shocks in the back."
"Michael, they have not caught the pace car yet, so you just keep going around and catching up," Ty said.
Bobby said they needed Dwayne to come up front and told Ron to get with Dwayne.
"I say we need more bumpstop, because if the splitter's broken, I couldn't have driven it any differently the whole time. Maybe bumpstop would have helped a little bit," Mikey stated.
"10-4, 10-4," Bobby replied.
"Getting everything the way you did, a couple times lately, you've had to do that. NASCAR also commended you today, the way you work with them, so that's pretty cool."
"10-4. All right, do the tires, do the repairs, then do the adjustments there." Bobby told the guys to take their time, be careful, and watch the #21 coming around. "Hey, Michael, just go ahead and stop a little long, just stop him a little long in the box so we don't screw up the 21, so the 21 can get out."
Drivers pit under yellow.
"It will be first gear, 35," Bobby said. "Just stop long at your sign so we don't screw the 21 up."
"Let me know if that 21's going to be about ready to pull off," Mikey requested.
"10-4. I'm watching him. It's going to be close. They're on their left side. It's going to be close. Stop, stop. Turn your wheel to the right, to the right. All right, right there. Well hustle up, guys. Hustle up. Make your repairs up front. Get that tape, get that tape," Bobby directed during the stop.
"Bobby, they're going to be on one to go, which here on the road course, means they're coming to the green."
"We can't sit here much longer," Mikey said.
"Go, guys, we gotta go," Bobby told the team.
"Bobby, you've got to tell them to bail out, man."
Bobby told the crew to hurry and then for Mikey to go.
"Be nice if people would listen."
"Michael, they're just now to the inner loop, to the inner loop, so you have some time. All right, now, hammer down," Ty guided. "The front of the field is just now getting to Turn 10."
"I just now caught them. I should have been calmer," Mikey conceded. "It's my fault."
"It's cool, it's cool. Still got a little bit of time left. All right, buddy, coming off Turn 11. Pace car's off. Remember, pass to the left side only, left side only. Start picking it up, start picking it up. Green green green. Clear three back."
Kyle Busch led the restart on lap 51. Mikey was 37th, David 43rd and lapped, and McDowell 11th. The top fourteen cars had not pit. One lap into the run, McDowell fell to 14th.
"Clear three back," Ty noted. "66 lame up on the left side. The right side. Clear, clear. Clear three back. Nice job."
On lap 53, Mikey picked up 36th. McDowell was 15th, and David was still last and lapped.
"Driver's right," Dave warned. "Clear, clear."
Carl Edwards pit under green for their final stop.
"78. Clear one back."
"Stay after it. Four more laps, we're going to do a gas and go. Four more laps," Bobby told his driver.
Mikey was 35th and McDowell 14th on lap 54. Tony Stewart took the lead the next time around the track. Mikey picked up 34th.
"Clear one back."
Busch allowed his teammate to lead going into lap 55 but took back the lead.
"Clear. Nice job," Dave praised.
Mikey was 33rd on lap 56. McDowell was 15th.
Juan Pablo Montoya took the lead on lap 57 as a slew of cars, including Busch and Stewart, went to pit road.
"These people are getting to their windows, so watch them here," Ty said. He asked Bobby when they were coming in.
"Next time by, next time by. It will be a gas and go. Next time by," Bobby replied.
Mikey was 28th on lap 57. McDowell was 7th, and David was 43rd.
"Pit this time?" Mikey asked.
"Pit this time, pit this time, bud," Bobby told his driver on lap 58. The #55 went to pit road, and did the #00.
Ty reminded his driver not to slide the tires. "Come around the cones. Watch that 21."
Bobby kept telling his driver to keep the car revved up through the stop. "Go go go go! First gear and 35, first gear and 35."
"That was a lot of 'keep it revved up' for two seconds."
"I was trying to watch my gas man."
Ty cleared Mikey back on track.
Cars continued to pit. Jimmie Johnson took the lead on lap 59.
"Keep it on the road the rest of the way here," Ty said. "Clear about eight back to the 24. He just came off pit road."
"Where's the leader?" Mikey asked.
"The 48 just now getting into Turn 1. You're in good shape."
Mikey was 34th on lap 60. McDowell was 32nd, and David was last and lapped. Johnson pit at the end of the lap, giving the lead to Earnhardt Jr.
"Still clear three back to the 24," Ty said. "Looking inside, inside. You're back to clear, back to clear.
"Driver's right, driver's right. Clear behind him," Dave noted.
On lap 62, David picked up 41st; Robby Gordon and Travis Kvapil had dropped back. Mikey was 35th, and McDowell was 28th.
"Clear three back, two back to the 70," Ty observed.
McDowell picked up 26th one lap later.
"Still clear two back. 70 is clear two back to the 6. Looking low, just looking. Inside, he's there. Got the 6 with him, the 6 is with him. Clear there. Junior's the leader, at the line now."
"Just pushing," Mikey reported.
"10-4, 10-4," Bobby replied.
Kvapil, who was 43rd, drove off track.
The second caution was on lap 65. Earnhardt Jr, the leader, had not pit yet. He was the only one who hadn't. Reed Sorenson received the free pass.
"Caution's out, caution's out. There's debris somewhere, over in the loop."
Mikey complained about not getting lap times under green. "Just say you're sorry, because there ain't no excuse. Surely someone can give me a lap time."
"10-4. I'm sorry," Bobby replied.
"This car is plowing, if y'all got any ideas," Mikey continued. "I know I said that already, so if y'all would pitch something around there, it would be nice."
"We're going to put air back like we started the race.
"I believe I would have done that after that first, second adjustment, but I guess we didn't get a chance. It's just terrible, terrible. It's like what it was at the start of the race."
Bobby said they'd put on four tires.
"Well, you might ought to think about doing something else, because it's plowing."
"Both ways? Left and right?"
"Plowing. Just more right hand turns. I'd worry about that."
Ty said pit road would be open this time.
Bobby directed the crew regarding the air adjustment and four tires. He guided his driver to pit road next.
"Something to drink there? Something to drink for him?" Bobby asked. "First gear and 3500, first gear and 3500."
"3500, and when you get there, we're going to be coming around to the green next time," Ty said.
"We just needed to beat a couple guys out there and not worry about something to drink. That was the most casual pit stop I've ever seen. And now I'm stuck behind this 28. Y'all need to tighten up in there now."
"10-4," Bobby replied. "I don't think me talking about a drink made us slow. We were just fucking slow."
Mikey said they let down the jack like they were ten laps down.
"Coming to the green, Ty?"
"Coming to the green, coming to the green."
"We'll have to get together in the morning and talk about how we can make things smoother on this deal," Mikey stated. "That was ridiculous."
"10-4, 10-4."
"This is going to be 25 to go. So this is time when we pick them off, when they all make mistakes." Ty told Dave to be ready to guide Mikey through the chicane. "Pace car's off. Ready? Start rolling. Green green green. Left side only, left side only. Clear clear."
Kyle Busch led the restart on lap 67. Mikey was 37th, David was 42nd and lapped, and McDowell was 24th.
"Still there. Clear, clear."
"Clear by five, Michael," Dave noted.
McDowell picked up a spot one lap into the run.
"15.94.
"16.16."
Mikey was 36th on lap 69, having passed David Ragan. McDowell dropped to 26th one lap later as Mikey picked up 35th after passing Almirola.
"14.80, 14.80," Bobby read off lap times.
On lap 71, PJ Jones spun, rear-ended the tire barrier, and kept going. Jones had spun off Sam Hornish Jr's nose.
"Spin in front of you. Stay low, stay low. No caution yet. Keep digging. No caution yet," Ty said. "Still out there, still there. Clear. One back to the 77 now."
Mikey was 33rd on lap 72 due to the incident. David was 41st; Scott Riggs was now behind him.
"Still behind you, still behind you. Still on your left side. Clear all clear. Ran up the course again, he did, so you're clear three back."
"14.80, 14.80," Bobby read off times.
On lap 74, McDowell lost a spot to Earnhardt Jr.
"14.60, 14.60."
"Clear all clear," Dave noted. "17 to go. 17."
"15.10, 15.10."
"The shifter ball fell off," Mikey sounded like he said.
"14.30, 14.30. Good lap!"
By lap 76, David was 40th. McDowell had regained 26th from Earnhardt Jr, and Mikey was 33rd.
"14.70, 14.70."
Passing Clint Bowyer on lap 77 moved the #00 into 25th. Ryan Newman came into the corner too hot and spun out. He backed into traffic. Cars all avoided him. Well after many, many cars had passed, Hornish Jr ran up behind him and pushed his teammate to pit road.
The third caution was on lap 79. Robby Gordon picked up the free pass.
"All right, Michael, when you come through Turn 1, caution's out, caution's out. When you come through Turn 1, come through low."
"Car any better right there, bud?"
"No, plowing. I can hardly shift. How many lead lap cars are behind me? Well, it don't matter. It broke. The shifter broke."
Bobby said five cars would be behind him. Mikey was now 32nd due to Newman's misfortunes.
"Pit road's closed right now, Bobby," Ty noted.
"Okay, 10-4." Then Bobby made the call, "We're going to stay out right now, stay out."
The #12 went to pit road with the hood up. Meanwhile, Hornish in the #77 was now outside the top 35 in owners points.
"Stay out, stay out," Bobby reiterated. "It'll be seven laps to go."
"Where's he going?" Mikey asked.
"You'll be coming to the green when you come around, coming to the green. It will be ten to go when you take the green," Ty replied. "He's going to be coming by you at some point... okay, he already passed you."
"Coming to the green?" Bobby asked. "10-4."
"I think the 12 said there's water on the back straightaway. There's some kind of issue there. Yeah, not going to go, not going to go."
Newman stalled on the track after coming off pit road.
"All right, buddy, when you come back around, you'll be coming to the green," Ty told his driver. "All right, buddy, you'll be coming back to the green this time, coming back to the green this time. It will be nine to go. Be 55, 78, 88. I don't know how it's lined up over there. 55, 78, 88. Pace car's off. Pick it up if you can, left side only. Be ready, be ready. Green green green. Outside only."
Busch led the lap 82 restart. Mikey was 31st, David lapped in 42nd, and McDowell 24th.
"Clear one back," Ty noted. "Got one down there. Got two down there. You see him. Still there. 15 still there. Still there. Nice job, man! Nice job!"
"15 clear," Dave stated.
"Spin in front of you. Right there. Holy cow! Real sorry, man."
"I'm done. Wouldn't you say."
"It didn't look very good. You may well be." Bobby told Ron to get a radiator ready.
"We got an oil line, but if the wrecker can get over here and get me back in you, we could get a radiator back there. We still have the motor." Mikey said he just needed the nose towed in.
Ty said the truck had been right next to him.
"Tell him I really need a tow here. I need a tow right now. Tell them I need it bad. We can salvage it if we can get back.
"McDiddle was at the root of that."
"10-4." Bobby told them to get to the garage.
Mikey said he didn't need an oil cooler, just get water in it.
Bobby said to get a set of tires over there too.
McDowell had caused a huge wreck, shoving David Gilliland into the wall. Gilliland slammed into Mikey as he spun. Bobby Labonte, Dave Blaney, Max Papis, Sam Hornish Jr, Reed Sorenson, Robby Gordon, Joe Nemechek, Paul Menard, and Ryan Newman were all collected. Many made hard contact. David was able to manuever through the wreckage without incident.
"We just need one more wrecker here. It would be nice," Mikey said. "Bobby, you can just take all the sheet metal off. Don't worry about keeping anything. I just bounced of fof somebody. I sort of hit them as I was spinning. I don't know how bad it looked."
"They went into the corner, I saw McD get into that 38." Ty said he couldn't tell what happened after that.
Mikey said he knew, because Ty didn't say anything either. "Hey, if you could all communicate with the inspector... If y'all could just talk to the inspector and tell them I could just get a push. I don't need a wrecker."
The red flag came out at about 4:25pm on lap 83, after the yellow flag had waved.
"They say they won't tow it, because the red flag's out. Well how can they clear the track if they won't tow it?"
Somebody said it's because they weren't done for the day, so they wouldn't tow them.
"Well." The rest came in static from Mikey.
"10-4. They said as soon as the red flag's lifted, they'll send somebody to push you."
"Hey, Bobby? There's no steering damage, it's just radiator and oil cooler. So we might be able to not touch the nose. We might be able to raise the hood and screw the hood, whatever you think is fastest." The rest was too staticky.
"10-4, 10-4," Bobby replied. "They have summonned Mr. McDowell to the NASCAR hauler after the race. Hey, they got you on TV right now."
"Yeah, I got a big one in front of me. But they won't do nothing. They all just stand there. There's a truck that could push me over there easy, but I don't understand what's best for the sport."
ESPN announced that David Gilliland was also sent to the hauler. Bobby Labonte was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation.
"Uh oh. Here comes Charlie," Mikey said.
"They let the 12 roll right to his pit stall. They're ready to change his tires."
"I could have done that, but I couldn't get there."
"Everyone else has been brought in," Mikey said. "Which I don't understand. They took everyone else in."
Bobby said whoever NASCAR cleared is out of the race.
"Okay." A moment later, Mikey asked, "Where was I running?"
"I think we're showing 25th right now, so we would have been 30th before the crash." Bobby mumbled the rest. "I'll get my fan scan fired up here, give you an update."
"I'm going to come through the infield, so have somebody standing out there to direct me as best you can."
Bobby sent Chris to guided the #55.
"Help these guys here, make sure we have clear passage to get in here," somebody said.
"How much longer?" Mikey asked.
"Um, probably four or five minutes. They have a ton of speedy dry," Ty said. "I can't see what's going on, but I see some lights flashing at the other side of the bridge." He said everyone went into the bridge single-file, and people came out of it in the air.
"Mikey, do you think they're going to bring you back behind the backstretch grandstand? Is that what you're thinking?" Ty asked.
"No, up through the middle," Mikey replied.
"I thought they were holding you up like they'd take you around the track. There's nothing you can do. They'll tell you what to do."
"Well, I learned a lesson. I could have just said I think we're out, but I guess it doesn't really matter in the whole scheme of things," Mikey commented.
"All right, man, maybe a couple more minutes," Ty said after a long pause.
At 5:05pm, engines refired, and cars got rolling.
"Are they rolling yet, Ty?" Mikey asked.
"You guys over there at the truck?" somebody asked.
"Yeah, 10-4," someone replied.
"Mikey, you'll be turning right here."
"Are they rolling yet?" Mikey asked again.
"Yeah, guys, we'll just put the hood up and replace this radiator. Leave the nose in tact," somebody said. "Somebody go ahead and jack this up so we can look underneath it, get these tires up."
"Up on the left, change these tires," Bobby directed.
"Just follow on through, through the tethers," Mikey said.
Cars went to pit road as Mikey went to the garage for the radiator repair. Meanwhile, in the #55 garage, Bobby gave directions to the crew in top speed. He told the crew to take a cover off something.
"Be quarter inch, quarter inch nut drivers, or seven meters," a crew member said.
A piece of debris on the track delayed the restart.
"11/16th wrench, please," someone requested.
"Bobby, you might want to get with Kenny and make sure he knows what we're doing too," Mikey adviced.
"They're coming around to the green. It will be five to go," Ty told the team.
"Okay," Bobby replied. "10-4."
Busch led the restart on lap 86. McDowell was 25th, David was one lap down in 33rd, and Mikey was three laps down in 39th and in the garage.
"We can finish," Mikey said. Position-wise, he had nothing to gain. Everyone behind him was out, and the next one in front of him was on the track and just one lap down.
"Will you put that tire go, and go down on the right?" somebody asked as the white flag waved. "Come on a second. Go up a little bit more. Up a little bit more."
"How many laps left, Ty?" Mikey asked.
"Coming around to the white, guys, coming around to the white."
"We can still drive down there and get the white."
"Yeah, they just took it."
A crew member continued talking about an adjustment.
"Coming your way, Ty," a crew member said.
"All right, come on out," Ty guided. "They are just now coming out the back straightaway. Might as well go hard, don't you think? Go ahead. Be respectful."
"Yeah, I'm just going to ease on down here. I appreciate y'all's work. That's just good work," Mikey said. "Y'all did perfect, so thank you."
"Ease on around here. Kyle Busch just won."
"Way to go, 55. I'm up here on your left. Way to go," Dave praised.
"Good work, guys. That was just a good effort." Most of what Mikey said came with static. "Just chalk that up to experience."
Bobby's words were totally covered in static.
Mikey finished seven laps down in 39th. David was the first driver one lap down in 33rd, and McDowell finished 25th.
