Mikey finished ? in the Coke Zero 400 by Kellyanne Lynch
5 July 2008
Michael Waltrip was wrecked on the last lap of the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway during a green/white/checkered finish. Results of the race are unknown at this time in regard to Michael Waltrip Racing.
"1, 2, 3. You got a copy? 1, 2, 3. 1, 2, 3," somebody said on the #55 radio frequency at 8:05pm ET.
"Got a copy on me?" crew chief Bobby Kennedy asked moments later.
"Check 1, 2. You guys hear me?" someone said.
"Yeah, 10-4."
"1, 2. Hello?" Mikey asked.
"Yeah, man, got you loud and clear," Bobby responded. "Loud and clear, M-Dub."
"Roger."
"All right, bud, you got a copy?" spotter Ty Norris came over the radio.
"Everything sounds good," Mikey replied.
"Thank you."
Dale Jarrett gave the command to start engines at 8:08pm.
"All right, Ty, here on pit road, we're going to have a tough time seeing him because of these lights. I can probably pick him up at about the 00 or the 8 car right there. If you'll get him to that opening between that 8 and that..." Bobby's voice faded out.
Ty told Mikey his pit stall was five boxes away from the Daytona International Speedway tower.
"All right," Mikey replied. "How does that correlate to the start-finish line."
"You're about ten or twelve away from that start/finish line."
"All right, that would be better. Ten or twelve from the start/finish line."
Mikey suggested taking air out of the right front tire if the car was still pushing during the first run.
"Yeah, 10-4. I have a lot of room on those left sides. So keep me posted," Bobby replied.
"Hey, write down somewhere, when we come back to Daytona to qualify, we probably ought to skew our rear end the wrong way," Mikey suggested.
"All right. Copy that on the rear end. I had a technical difficulty there," Bobby said after a long pause.
"Yeah, that would just make sense, and we can change it after qualifying," Mikey commented. "I don't know. Maybe it doesn't make no sense."
"Right on." Bobby told his driver he should have 4750 for pit road speed.
"All right, I've got 4650 behind the pace car, but I'll go to 4750. Aw, I kind of got 47. I'll go with 4750. And I didn't see nothing wrong with two tires at all last night, especially after he ran fifteen laps, and the guy who kept two kept the lead, so keep that in mind."
Bobby said they would. "It's worked on all different kind of tires we've had in the past. I don't think the one we got tonight will be any different."
Mikey suggested another adjustment. "Cause, if it gets tighter, it'll just keep getting tight."
"Right on," Bobby replied. "We don't want this car to get away from us."
Mikey praised the team on their work last week. "What I do? Run over something? I never heard you say I cut a tire. I thought maybe you didn't."
Bobby said he had told him it was a good call and he did have a tire going down.
"Did I run over something?"
"10-4."
"I thought maybe I got into somebody." Mikey said, his point was, the crew did a good job. "Focus up. We'll knock it out this week."
"All right, Ty, you're with M-Dub the next few hours. We'll take care of him in the pits."
Ty noted the #21 was dropping to the rear. "The 84 said he had to go behind the wall, and the 78 is dropping back, so we'll be looking for them to do that in the next couple minutes."
"All right, buddy, you'll be coming to the green this time. Coming to the green this time," Ty added a minute later.
Paul Menard led the field to the green flag at 8:20pm ET. Mikey was 26th, McDowell was 16th, and David was 31st. Ty warned Mikey about cars checking but then said everyone was rolling.
"It's going to be still outside, still outside. The 42 bailed on you. Still outside. Still got you covered outside. Still there. Outside. Still coming. 1 car's got you. Going to be clear up, clear up."
"Well that ain't a very good sign. I can't keep up with nobody right now," Mikey commented. He was 32nd by the end of the first lap. Ty cleared him behind the #2 of Kurt Busch. "One backing up in the middle there, backing up in the middle there. Still clear low."
Jon Wood's #21 went to the garage on lap 3. Mikey was 35th.
"Still outside. Three-wide. Still there, still there. Got one outside now, one outside. Outside - 26. Going to be clear behind the 26 if you need it. Clear one back. Still outside. He's got one with him now. Clear behind the red car. Clear two back. All clear, all clear. Still outside. Still there. Clear the 10. Clear, clear. Coming back outside, coming back outside. The 16."
"I was never... don't call it if you can't see it!" Mikey told his spotter on lap 4. He was 36th.
"Still out there. Still out there. One back to the 16. Clear all clear. Clear the... got one coming back outside, outside. 41 still outside. Still there. Got the 16 down there with you."
Mikey was 35th on lap 5. David was 30th, and McDowell was 17th.
"Clear both sides. All clear," Ty said. "Clear one back to the 10. 16's behind him. Still clear two back. Clear four back."
Mikey was 34th on lap 7.
"Clear low. All clear. Got the 16 pushing you."
"I don't really having any bump issues. I mainly have front grip and rear grip. I'm just pushing and loose. Mainly pushing," Mikey reported.
"Okay, 10-4, 10-4," Bobby replied.
"I feel like, if I had more front grip, I'd be better."
"Okay, 10-4, 10-4."
"Still outside. Got the 16 down there with you. Still outside," Ty noted.
Mikey was 33rd on lap 9. David was 22nd, and McDowell was 36th.
"99 still out there. Still there. Clear now. Clear, clear. Still clear one back. Still outside. Outside. Got the 70 backing up on top. Still outside. Clear both sides. All clear. Clear back to the 16 on the bottom."
Mikey was 31st on lap 11 and 32nd on lap 12.
"Still out there. 70 still there. Clear all clear. Clear two back. Side by side."
Lap 16 saw Mikey move into 29th.
"Still outside. 26 still on your corner. Still there. Clear low, all clear."
On lap 14, Mikey was 27th. David was 19th, and McDowell was 37th.
"It will be clear up behind him if you need it. Clear one back."
"All right, I'm going to make an air pressure adjustment and raise that track bar one round. Air pressure adjustment and raise the track bar one round," Bobby told his driver.
"Still clear two back. Still clear, still clear. Looking low. Inside. He's there. 26 by himself. Clear behind him if you need it," Ty warned. "Still outside. Three-wide outside. Three-wide outside. 38's on the outside. Back to two-wide. Everyone's got help up top. 42's outside. He's getting help from the 16. Clear up behind him if you need it. Clear."
Mikey had been 27th on lap 16 but fell to 30th the next time around the track.
"That 11's still out there. Still there. All clear now. Clear. Still down there. Clear now, clear. Still clear three back."
On lap 18, Mikey was 28th. He was warned about the #99 outside.
"Caution's out. Caution's out. Caution's out. Back it down," Ty warned on lap 20. Dale Earnhardt Jr had just taken the lead.
AJ Allmendinger drew the first yellow flag when he hit the wall. He had lost his right front tire. His #84 was towed to the garage. Jon Wood received the free pass, getting back one of the eight laps he was off the pace.
"I think I need some air out of my right front," Mikey reported.
"10-4, 10-4. I'll give you one round on that track bar, take air out of both your front liners." Bobby said he'd look at Mikey's left side tires too and determine if they could go with two tires later on.
TrackPass' transmission became shaky at this point. Radio chatter was incoherent as it went in and out.
Leaders pit under caution. Robby Gordon led a lap under yellow, and Kyle Busch was the first driver off pit road.
Bobby said a two tire stop didn't look like an option. "The left sides are wearing more than the rights."
"All right, the 44 is saying the same thing with their tires - more wear on the left than on the right," Bobby reported a moment later.
"All right, bro, we're going to be coming to the green, coming to the green," Ty told his driver. "All right, bud, be ready. Pace car's off. Green green green. Everybody's straight."
Kyle Busch led the restart on lap 24. Mikey was 28th, David was 22nd, and McDowell was 33rd.
"Clear all clear. You've got the 16 and the 1 in your mirror. Single-file," Ty noted. "Still outside. Still there. Still outside. 77 still outside. Still there. Both lines have help. Clear clear, clear clear. Still clear, all clear. Got the 43 car helping you on the bottom. 16's got a run. He's peaking on you. Outside, he's there. Outside."
Mikey was 27th on lap 26.
"Two more coming. Outside. 16, 00 still outside, outside. Got the 43 jumping down to help. Clear now, clear clear."
"Well, I'm sorry about that. It just took off on me," Mikey apologised.
"10-4, you're good. Still clear. Use whatever you need. Clear two back."
On lap 27, Mikey was 30th. He was 31st the next time around the track.
"Clear one back to the 00, 43. With the 00, 43, you've got help."
"Tell this one to keep his eyeballs open. I don't want him running over me if they get backed up," Mikey said.
"10-4. I will. Clear there, clear there. Still outside. Still outside. Just one. Outside. Still outside. Everybody's got help. Outside, outside. Clear there. Clear one back."
Lap 32 saw Mikey and McDowell rise to 27th and 28th. David was 15th.
"Still there. Clear the 42. All clear. Will be looking outside, looking outside. Clear low. Cars outside. You've got help outside. He jumped up top. Still out there. Still there. Still outside. Still there. Low if you need it. Outside, outside."
Lap 33 saw Mikey in 26th. McDowell was 29th.
"Still outside, outside. 2's still there, still on your corner, still there. 11 coming back to him."
Mikey was 28th on lap 36. McDowell was 33rd, and David was 17th.
Dale Earnhardt Jr took the lead on lap 37.
"Inside, inside. He's got the 11 down there with him," Ty warned. Clear either side, all clear. Clear low. All clear. 15's still outside. It's going to be clear up behind him. Clear one back. Looking inside, inside. The 07, inside. He's down there by himself."
On lap 38, Mikey was 27th. He was 26th one lap later.
"Clear the 07. All clear," Ty noted. "Coming back inside, back inside. Still down there by himself. Clear there. Clear, clear. Clear the 15. All clear. One more outside, outside. Clear behind him if you need it."
"All right, tell me about your car," Bobby requested. Mikey was 25th.
"I want work."
"All right, 10-4, 10-4."
"Still clear, still clear. Two back."
"It's better now, but it's still a handful," Mikey clarified.
"All right. 10-4."
"Still coming back outside, outside. The 15 trying to come with him. Inside. Still outside. Still there. Still outside. Clear behind him. Clear one back, one back. 15's got a run inside."
On lap 41, Mikey was 24th. David was 16th, and McDowell was 29th.
"Clear two back, clear two back. Clear. The 15 all clear. Clear two up. Clear one back. You're going to be clear up, if you need it. Coming inside, inside. 15's got the 1 with him."
Lap 44 saw the second caution for Ryan Newman, who spun after Jamie McMurray got into his rear. Boris Said received the free pass.
"In front of you. Stay up, stay up, stay up. No caution yet. Caution's out, caution's out," Ty guided. "It's hard to tell. It didn't look like we got any piece of it. Did anyone get into you, bud?"
Bobby asked for his temps.
"220, 240."
Bobby called for four tires and considered an air pressure adjustment.
"Okay. You might be on the max with that left front, but a little bit more might help there. I wouldn't take anything more out of the right front right now. It might..." Trackpass cut out Mikey.
"Billy, I mean Paul's squeezing all he can out of that right front." Bobby called for four tires. "Same deal. You'll have a straight shot in. 29's behind us, right, Ty?"
"No."
"29's behind us," Mikey said.
"29's behind us. So is the 16."
"It never goes a full green flag run. I'm thinking I can get on up through there."
"10-4. Four tires, guys. Four tires."
"All right, buddy. Good job. Everything nice and tight."
Bobby commented that he couldn't see Mikey come onto pit road. Ty guided him.
Mikey pit with the field under yellow.
"Still didn't see any two tires down there, Bobby," Ty commented after stops.
"10-4, 10-4. Thank you," Bobby replied.
"All right, man, it's going to be one to go when you get here. The 60 car is going to come around the outside of you there. I'll let you know when he's coming. All right, here comes the 60."
Kevin Harvick attempted to lead a lap under yellow. He didn't end up getting to lead and wound up losing track position.
"All right, them left sides look the same again. We can't do two tires tonight. We're going to be on the four program," Bobby informed his driver.
"Yeah, that's cool," Mikey replied.
Kyle Busch led the lap 46 restart with Mikey in 22nd, David in 17th, and McDowell in 25th.
"All right, bud, be ready. Pace car's coming off. Ready? Green green green. Clear three back. No pressure. Still clear five back. Clear any lane. Clear all lanes. Clear high, clear high."
Mikey was 21st on lap 47.
"22 still there. Clear now, clear. Still all clear. One back to the 22."
Mikey was 20th on lap 49. David was 19th, and McDowell was 24th.
"Still outside. Stillt here. Nobody's down there with you. Still outside. The 6 gets there, it will be clear behind him if you want it. Clear one behind you to the 22. Still outside, still outside. No pressure for you. Still outside. 5's still there. You've got the 22 coming with a push. You're all clear, all clear. Inside now. Inside. 5's trying to look inside, inside. 5's got help."
Mikey was 19th on lap 52. David was 15th, and McDowell was 24th.
"Clear there. All clear," Ty continued. "Good job. Clear two back, clear two back. Still clear all clear. Still clear all clear. Should be clear low, clear low. Clear there if you need it. Clear one back. Either side. One back. Still there. Clear the 9. Clear. Coming back on the outside, the 9. Still coming outside."
"I swear, I smell air out of a tire. I just don't know if it's mine or if I'm dreaming or what, but I think I've got a right front going down," Mikey said on lap 53. He was 18th.
"10-4. Back inside now, inside," Ty said. Still clear. Clear, clear. Outside's covered. Coming outside, coming outside. Two more. 1 car still outside. Clear three back behind him if you need it. There you go. Clear two back."
Dale Earnhardt Jr reclaimed the lead on lap 55. Mikey was 19th, David was 17th, and McDowell was 25th.
"Clear there, all clear. Half back to the 43. Still outside. Still there. 22's still on your corner. Still outside. Still there. Still outside. Still there. Clear half back to the 22. Still there inside. Clear low now, clear now. Clear there, clear there. Half back to the 11."
Mikey was 22nd on lap 57.
"Still outside. Still there," Ty warned. "The 11's closing up the top side. Outside. He's by himself. Clear behind him if you need it. All right, bud, you're all clear. Single file behind you. 11's still out there. The 5 jumped up there with him. Outside, outside. He's there. The 1's back behind you now. Clear one up if you need it."
On lap 59, Mikey was 18th.
"Clear two back, clear two back. 11's outside. The 29 jumped up there with him. Clear behind the 29."
Mikey was 20th on lap 60. David was 15th, and McDowell was 30th. The #55 was 21st the next time around the track.
"Still outside. Still there. Still clear up there, about ten back, about ten back. Still there, still there. Still clear up if you need it. Still clear ten back. Still there. Still outside. Clear up. Clear one back to the 31. All clear. Still outside. The 5's got the 31 with him. The 5's got the 31 with him. Still there, still there. Got two more coming outside. 1 car's coming with the 31. He's the last one. Clear six back. Clear two back. That other group is catching you pretty quick. The 41's going to be the first one to your mirror. Still clear, still clear. Still clear half back. Coming outside now. Outside, outside. Inside, inside. Both sides. Both sides. Got another one coming outside. You're going to be clear now. 43's down there inside. Single-file now. All clear."
On lap 66, Mikey was 22nd. David was 13th, and McDowell was 30th.
"It's gotten real tight," Mikey reported.
"Okay, 10-4, 10-4," Bobby replied.
"Tight and loose. I don't know what's going on."
"All right, 10-4, 10-4. Twenty laps away from pitting. Twenty away."
"Coming outside, man, outside. The 43. Clear four behind him. Still clear two back."
Lap 67 saw Mikey in 26th. David was 15th, and McDowell was 29th.
"Still clear two back to the 2," Ty continued.
On lap 68, Mikey was 27th. David was 14th, and McDowell was 30th.
The third caution was on lap 70 for Greg Biffle, who got into Juan Pablo Montoya and spun.
"Spin in front of you. Spin in front of you. Come on down, come on down. There you go. Caution's out."
"I got a really really... I'm really going to need some help with my pressures or something. I'm out of control loose, and I'm plowing. It gets in backwards, and um..."
Bobby cut him off to say he would get the air back up. He called for four tires.
"We haven't picked up the pace car yet, so we're not pitting this time, Michael," Ty told his driver.
"We've got to do some combo shit, man. Don't just put some air in the left rear. Work with me. Damn," Mikey said.
Bobby acknowledged. He called for two pounds up on one tire to help with entry and a track bar adjusment for tightness. Mikey said he wanted air in the left front too.
Ty noted the #16 was out of the race. The #55 went to pit road with the rest of the field. Tony Stewart got out of the #20, and JJ Yeley got in for him; Stewart was sick and had been given IVs pre-race.
"Let me know what you see there real fast. Let me know," Mikey requested.
"10-4," Bobby replied.
"All right, bro, one to go when you get here," Ty said. "One to go."
Bobby noted build-ups were normal. "You're still using the heck out of the left front here."
"Well, it must be too much cambre or something. I just can't get comfortable with the car at all. It pushes, and it's loose. It's crap," Mikey replied.
Earnhardt Jr led the lap 74 restart. Mikey was 25th, David was 12th, and McDowell was 26th. Jimmie Johnson shot to the top spot.
"Everybody's straight, everybody's straight," Ty said. "Clear one back. The 00. Still clear one back. All single-file."
Johnson led lap 75, and Earnhardt Jr took to pushing him. Mikey was up to 22nd, McDowell 23rd, and David 9th.
"Still clear. One back. Still clear," Ty noted. "Clear one back to the 70 now. Clear one back to the 70. Looking high. Outside now, outside. 70 outside, outside. Clear up if you need it. Clear up. Clear three back. Still there inside, inside. Clear the 5. All clear, all clear. Still clear high. Still got him inside. Clear high."
Mikey was still 22nd on lap 76. McDowell was 24th, and David was 10th. One lap later, Mikey was 21st, David was 11th, and McDowell was 23rd.
"Clear there. All clear. Still got him outside. Still got him outside. Got help coming. Still got him outside. Still outside. 9 still down there with you. Still outside though."
On lap 79, Jimmie Johnson took the lead. Mikey was 19th, McDowell was 20th, and David was 22nd.
Ty warned Mikey that he was going three-wide. "Outside, outside. Two more looking outside. Still two by two. No help. Outside."
Jeff Gordon took the lead on lap 80. Mikey was 17th, McDowell was 21st, and David was 25th.
"You're clear. Use whatever you need. Clear one back." Ty warned about a car coming outside. "Got the 00 coming to help. Clear one back to the 2 up top. Got one outside now, outside. Clear up behind him if you need it. Stay up, stay up. You're good, all good. Still there inside. Still there. Clear there. Now clear."
Kyle Busch dropped dramatically through the ranks on lap 82. His steering was not aligned correctly. Mikey was 23rd, McDowell was 24th, and David was 30th.
"Clear there if you need it. The 31's coming outside. The 2's trying to come with him. Inside, inside. Clear half back. Clear half back. Still clear up. Still clear half back."
On lap 84, Mikey was 22nd, David was 31st, and McDowell had dropped to 32nd.
"You have a run. Looking low. You're clear, clear. Still outside. He's still there. 7's outside. Clear there half back, half back to the 60."
Mikey was 24th on lap 85. David was 32nd, and McDowell was 36th.
"Looking low. He's inside. Back to clear."
"I'm worse now than I've been all day," Mikey reported.
"What's your biggest issue?"
"It's like you've got too much air out of the left front or something. I mean, I'm just really wiggling."
"10-4."
"Still outside. Still there. Still there. It's going to be clear up there if you need it. All clear. Clear four back."
"Just backing into the corner, then I'm bouncing all over the place. It's very scary, very very difficult," Mikey said on lap 89.
"All right, 10-4, 10-4," Bobby acknowledged.
"Clear half back to the 60. Clear half back."
On lap 89, Mikey was 24th, McDowell was 35th, and David was 38th.
"Inside, inside," Ty warned. "More inside, inside. Got two with him. Inside. More looking. Inside. The 20. You're clear behind that 41."
Mikey was 29th on lap 91. "I'm really loose in," he reported. McDowell was 35th, and David was 38th.
"All right, 10-4, 10-4," Bobby replied.
"Got the 18 one back looking low, looking low. Inside."
Lap 92 saw Mikey back in 31st. McDowell was 35th, and David was 38th.
"I'm so loose, I mean, y'all, I mean everything we've done has screwed up my car real bad. We're going to spin out," Mikey said.
"All right, just hang with it, bud. Just hang with it. In about twenty laps, we'll get ready to pit," Bobby encouraged his driver.
"Still clear five back," Ty said.
On lap 93, Mikey was 32nd. McDowell was 36th, and David was 38th.
"Still outside. Still there. Clear, clear, clear. Slow one on the bottom, slow one on the bottom."
Mikey was 33rd on lap 94. Two laps later, he regained the lost spot.
"This is incredibly loose, just like at every other big track all year. It's just incredibly, incredibly loose."
"That yellow car, the 17's going to be looking inside with him. Clear, all clear," Ty guided.
"Are we running faster with him in front?" Mikey asked, possibly referring to Terry Labonte. He was 33rd on lap 98.
"We heard you, bud. I'm sure Bobby's checking on it," Ty replied.
"The last three laps have been a little quicker," Bobby confirmed.
"Because I don't think my motor runs very good. Because I run off the turn, and he's ten car lengths behind me. Next thing I know, halfway down the straightaway, he's right behind me," Mikey commented. A couple laps later, he said, "I guess, the first stop, y'all made it better, and every since then, we've made it worse."
"Yeah, 10-4, 10-4. Put that track bar back to where it was before," Bobby told the team.
On lap 104, Dale Earnhardt Jr took the lead. David was five laps down.
"Still there. Still outside, still outside, still outside. Still there. Clear, clear."
Bobby said they needed to be on pit road on lap 116.
"How many is that?" Mikey asked.
"Eight more, eight more." Bobby said they might be able to pit later but had to be conservative and pull the mileage back when they lost the draft.
"As loose as I am, you ought to be able to push the mileage back up, because I've been really coasting into the turns."
"10-4," Bobby replied. He said he could move back up the mileage.
"Bobby, the 45 says he needs to be on pit road on lap 112," Ty reported.
"How about the 15? Can you get him, Ty?" Bobby asked.
Ty said it was the same thing.
"Yeah, we can do that. That one lap at the end isn't going to make a difference at the end either way."
"Might as well do it if you want to. That one extra lap might help us in the end anyway. That means you're going to have to complete three more, Michael."
"I hope I can," Mikey replied.
"We've got a crash in turn four, crash in turn four. Caution's out, caution's out."
The fourth caution was on lap 109 for Elliott Sadler, who lost a tire and hit the wall. David received the free pass and got back one of the five laps he was off the pace.
"This thing, man. I don't know if you understand. I don't guess you could, but I'm going to crash like that."
Bobby said he would fix the track bar and suggested a bumpstop adjustment.
"No, you don't understand. You don't get it. It's like you've taken five pounds of air out of the left front tire. It's like you've given me..." his voice faded out.
Bobby said the track bar was going down and he'd put air out.
Mikey said all the other tires were messed up by the right front, which he could trust. "It doesn't matter if you agree with me at this point. Taking packer out is like playing roulette." He said he was wobbling like he had flat tires.
Bobby reiterated track bar down and four tires with the air adjustments.
"I need some help with the windshield too."
"10-4. Yup."
"How many laps do we go on gas?"
"41 to 42, 41 to 42."
The team discussed keeping Mikey out to lead.
"The 99 did it. You won't be able to do it. Come on. 4750," Ty said. "Ten away. Two in front of the orange car."
"Right here. Wheels straight, put on the brakes. Straight shot out. Wheels straight," Bobby said. "Go go go go. Halfway, halfway. Go hard, go hard."
"45's outside, 45's outside," Ty warned.
Patrick Carpentier stayed out to lead a lap.
"Is there anything that tells us we can go 46 green flag laps if we pit with one to go?" Mikey asked.
"One second here. Let me punch it up, see what we get," Bobby replied.
"Bobby, clean-up crew is about done. One to go, one to go."
"No, it's too far of a stretch here. If we topped, it wouldn't hurt anything, but we're still going to be short by quite a bit."
"Well, I don't care, but I'm going to wreck... well, at first, I could go up in there, but now it's all messed up. I'll do whatever you want. Some of them back here are topping."
"What do you want to do, Bobby?" Ty asked.
"Yeah, he can come on in and top, come on in and top. 4750," Bobby replied.
"Ten away, ten away. Don't slide them, don't slide them."
"3, 2, 1. Right here, right here," Bobby guided.
"Come on up, come on up."
"It's full!"
"I figured it must have been by then," Mikey replied.
"Yeah, it should have been. I was just waiting on the wave."
"Well, don't ever assume anything."
"No, I wouldn't. I was just waiting on it to make sure."
Bobby noted Mikey's mileage was a lot better after he got back in the draft.
Earnhardt Jr led the restart on lap 114. Mikey was 29th, McDowell was 36th, and David was four laps down in 38th.
"10 behind you, one back. Clear, clear."
The race for the lead was side-by-side as the front six ran double-file.
"Clear two back," Ty said.
Denny Hamlin took the lead on lap 115. Mikey was 31st, McDowell was 33rd, and David was 37th.
"Clear, all clear. Clear two back. Clear one back. Still out there. Still there."
Mikey was 30th on lap 116. McDowell was 34th, and David was 37th.
"Still clear two back. Still all clear," Ty said. "Still outside. Still there, still there. Clear two back. Clear high. Clear, clear. Clear three back. Still inside. Still on the bottom."
On lap 118, Earnhardt Jr took the lead.
"Clear, clear," Ty said. "Still outside. Still there, still there. 22's outside, 22's outside. Clear behind him if you need it. Closing up. 10 coming outside. Clear up there if you need it. Clear two back, clear two back."
Mikey was 29th on lap 119. One lap later, Hamlin took the lead.
"Still clear. Got the 00 behind you. Still outside. Still outside. You're all clear. Good job, buddy. Clear three back."
David Ragan gave Earnhardt Jr a push into the lead on lap 122. Mikey was 26th.
"Inside. 70's got a big run up top, in your mirror now. Still outside. Still there. Still there. Still on your corner. Still there. Gap's closing. The 70's coming outside. Got help. Clear behind the 01 if you need it. Clear four back. No pressure. Use whatever you need. Car in the wall. Come through on the bottom. Come all the way down to the bottom. Pit road if you can get there. All right, back 'er down, back 'er down."
The fifth caution was on lap 124. David Gilliland got into Ryan Newman, who held the car. Jeff Burton hit the brakes hard and got rear-ended by Brian Vickers. David got the free pass; he was now three laps down.
Bobby asked about the car.
"It's really, really, really, really bad. Really bad. Just terrible. Just bounces. You need to put packer in the back, not take it out. I mean, I don't know what I'm fucking talking about. I just can't drive it," Mikey replied.
Bobby asked if it helped tighten him up on entry at all.
"Negative, negative. All we've done ever since the first stop is hurt me. Hurt me, hurt me, hurt me. Track bar. Whatever we've done. You know what I'm saying. You can cop an attitude and get mad about it, but I'm just telling you."
"I'm not mad about it." Bobby noted they were back where they'd started. "Get caught up here. We'll put four tires on, four tires."
"As him what the frig he thinks he needs five points for," Mikey said, referring to Earnhardt Jr staying on track when others pit.
"All right, let me get with him," Ty replied. "Just going to let you know the... The tractor's still out there, so we're not going to be one to go. We've got to stay out there, I think."
"Yeah, definitely stay out, as long as I'm leading."
"Good call, Michael, good call. We'll stay out this lap and get five points," Ty said.
"Pit next time. Four tires now, four tires," Bobby directed.
Mikey led lap 126 under caution.
"Maybe some wedge out of it would stiffen up that left front corner," Mikey suggested. "I don't know. Just do whatever you want. Just tell me you're going to do something big."
"All right, 4750 when you get to the line. One to go when you get around here."
"Doing wedge, doing wedge," Bobby told the team. "All right, guys, four tires."
"All right, ten away."
"Right here, right here," Bobby said. "Okay, all the way out. 4750. All the way out."
"All right, just sit tight for a second. You don't want to run the red light. Let the rest of the field go by." Ty noted Mikey had a couple of guys to run with. He said somebody back with him had a spark plug problem. Meanwhile, Boris Said led the race after the #55 had pit.
"Well now's the time to get all we can get. Try to get into the top twenty. Now's the time to get it, and if we wreck, we wreck. We're going to try to get positions here."
"Right on, right on. I'm sorry the car's so shitty." Bobby said the car was more like it was at the beginning of the race.
Said led the restart on lap 128. Cars bottled as Said got dropped out of line. Earnhardt Jr took the lead.
Ty said the #78 and #45 were pushing the #55. Mikey was 34th, McDowell was 18th, and David was three laps down in 36th.
"Clear three back. Whatever you need. Clear clear. Front of you, right in front of you. All the way on the bottom. Stay up. Coming back across. Okay, you passed him."
The sixth caution was on lap 131. Jamie McMurray thought he'd cleared Brian Vickers and spun himself off the #83. Martin Truex Jr sustained some damage too. David got the free pass and was now two laps down. Mikey was 32nd at the time.
"Who was behind us, Ty?" Bobby asked.
"About two. 78 and 45," Ty replied.
"Let's go ahead and put tires on you. You've got about two or three laps on them, but that pressure could help."
"Okay," Mikey agreed.
"It's going to be one to go when you get around here," Ty noted. "4750, 4750."
"Four tires, guys. Four tires," Bobby reminded the crew.
"Ten away. Ten away."
"Right here. Right here." After the stop, he said. "Okay. Clear out, clear out. 4750. Clear out."
"You're going to be coming to the green. Coming to the green this time," Ty told his driver. "You've got the 45 behind you, and the 44 will be here in one minute."
Earnhardt Jr led the restart on lap 133. Mikey was 32nd, McDowell was 18th, and David was two laps down in 36th.
"Everybody's rolling. Everybody's rolling. Clear, clear," Ty said.
"Hey, we've got the slowest car in town. I pushed the 10, no one was behind me, and now I lost the draft," Mikey told his team.
"We've got the 45 and the 44 coming with a push here," Ty replied.
Earnhardt Jr was shuffled out, and Gordon moved into the lead on lap 134.
"45's down there inside you. Clear behind him. 44 behind you. Spin right up in front of us. Stay up. Just stay straight. They're up in the fence."
The seventh caution was with 24 laps to go. Hamlin had spun out with contact and collected Newman. Both went to the inside wall. David got the free pass and was just one lap down.
"Want to do that again, Bobby?" Mikey asked.
"Yeah. Ty, if we keep somebody behind us. If we don't keep somebody behind us, we'll be in trouble."
"We need somebody behind us," Mikey said. "Just tell the 44 to stay behind me. He's going to get another lap, right? How many's he down?"
Bobby said Mikey didn't look very sporty.
"Yeah, we didn't pull a good peel here."
Bobby decided to have Mikey come in for four tires.
"That 45. He did it earlier. I know he's a lot faster than me."
"If a lot of them stay out, do you want to come in?" Ty asked. He said they'd pick up eight spots if they stay out. "We stayed out."
"Yeah, 10-4. Good deal there."
"All the way to the left. The 44's going to be coming around the outside here," Ty noted. "All right, we're on one to go, one to go."
"All right, it will be 21 to go when you get the green. 21," Bobby told his driver.
"All right, buddy, well we still have better tires than the guys in front of us, and we're coming to the green now."
Gordon led the restart on lap 139. Mikey was 23rd, McDowell was 29th, and David was one lap down in 34th.
"Clear two back to the 7," Ty noted. "Caution right in front of you, right in front of you. Back it down, back it down. Come down low if you can. There you go, there you go."
The eighth caution was on lap 140. David Ragan got into the back of JJ Yeley in the #20. Jeff Burton and Casey Mears went spinning when the field bottled behind them. Yeley held the car. David got the free pass and was back on the lead lap.
"Yeah, this thing won't... I don't know what's wrong with it, but it won't go right. I got pushed all the way down the back straightaway, so."
"Yeah, 10-4, I saw it on the restart. No oomf, bunch of drag, something." Bobby asked about the tires.
"We need an order out here. I think the 28 should be behind me. He pitted."
Ty said they would. When asked if they were going to stay out, Bobby said they would.
"Ask them down there, Bobby. They won't tell us out there. Yeah, you're behind the 41. You're past the 28 and behind the 41, and the 7 will be behind you until the 28."
"Here comes the 44 car. One last time. He's back on the lead lap now," Ty noted. "All right, buddy, one to go, one to go. Not real sure what's going on with the 83 there."
"He's got the side wiped off of it. I don't know if that has anything to do with it."
"He must not have pitted, and now he has a tire down or something. But we won't worry about him. Coming around to the green."
Gordon led the restart on lap 143. Mikey was 20th, McDowell was 28th, and David was 32nd.
"Everyone's straight. Clear three back," Ty said.
The #9 was smoking heavily due to tire rub with contact.
"Clear ten back. Whatever you want. Clear all clear. All right, you've got a smoker up top, up top, the 9. Clear low. You've got one outside. 9 car's been jamming them up up top here. Stay down, stay down. Still clear to the middle, clear to the middle. Clear high, clear high."
On lap 144, Mikey was 19th.
"Still outside. Still there. Still outside. Still outside. Lot of help up top. Clear, clear, clear. The 07 behind you, 07 behind you."
Mikey was 18th on lap 145.
"Still outside, still there. Clear, clear. Still outside. Clear, got the 07 coming on the bottom. Still all clear, all clear. The 07's with you, and then it's two back to two wide racing. 14 to go."
Mikey was 12th on lap 146. McDowell was 27th, and David was 31st.
"The 07's pushing you. That's about ten back to the 7."
Mikey was 10th on lap 147.
"Clear one back. The 07's looking high, but you're still clear. Clear behind him, clear behind him. Clear five back to the 7. He's all by himself. Looking outside. Clear. Coming back outside, outside, outside. Gonna be clear behind him. Clear six back. Twelve to go. The 20 coming. He's in the line behind you on the bottom. You've got the 20 and the 2. You've got a run here. Big push with the 2. Got the 2 with him, inside. Still down there. Still there, still there, still there. Spin behind you, spin behind you. Keep coming. Caution's out, caution's out, caution's out."
The nineth caution was with eleven laps to go. Boris Said lost it and spun. Jamie McMurray received the free pass.
"I just... I don't even have a car. I don't got nothing like these guys have got," Mikey commented.
"Yeah, I see that. That sucks," Bobby replied. He decided to stay out.
"Hey, you know, you've got to say something. Do you think we ought to go to pit road, or do we want to stay out?" Mikey asked.
Bobby said he'd already said they were staying out and told Mikey to pay attention.
"Don't tell me to pay attention, man!" Mikey snapped. "If I heard you say 'stay out', I wouldn't have asked. I didn't hear you. I'm just looking for some information."
Ty said Mikey was 14th and they were staying out.
"I'm pretty sure I'm paying attention. That's how I got this piece of shit up to where I've got it at."
"I know," Bobby replied. He told Mikey to get in front of Kurt Busch's #2 car.
"One to go when we come around here, which means we'll have eight to go."
Bobby and Ty warned Mikey about the #26 coming to the outside.
"I don't get that. We're inside ten laps," Ty said.
"Caution came out before," Mikey replied. Bobby repeated.
Ty said okay, then noted the first guy with tires was nine or ten cars behind him.
Gordon led the restart on lap 152. Mikey was 13th, McDowell was 22nd, and David was 23rd.
"All right, bud, here we go. Here we go," Ty said. "Pace car's off. Green green green. All clear. Got the 2 in your mirror. Down there. Three-wide, three-wide. Push coming. Two-wide. Clear, clear. You've got the 2 up there with you. 2 and 28 with you. Outside, outside, outside. Help both sides, help both sides. Everybody's got help. You've got more help on the bottom than he does. Seven to go. You're clear, clear, clear. Clear. Got a run outside now, outside, outside. Clear up behind him if you want it. Clear up behind him, two back. Clear the 2. All clear. Back outside. He has nobody with him. Still outside, still outside. Six to go. Outside. See what you've got. Stay low, stay low."
On lap 154, Mikey was 11th.
"The 88 leading your line on the bottom. Three-wide, three-wide. Four-wide, four-wide. Back to three-wide. Back to two. Back to two."
Mikey was 12th on lap 155.
"9 still outside, still outside. Five to go. 9 car's still outside, still there. Stay in the middle. Clear in the middle. Clear low, clear low. Outside now, outside. Got him bounced off the wall. Clear up. Behind the 22 if you need it. Three back. Four to go. Got a pusher. Three-wide. Three-wide, still outside. You've got a big run on the bottom. Crash behind you, crash behind you. Caution's out."
"Dude, that was some masterful work there. I know what you've got. That was a good job. We'll have a green/white/checkered when we get back here."
"Staying out," Bobby said.
The tenth caution was on lap 157. Dave Blaney hit the car in front of him, then hit Jimmie Johnson. David was collected, as was JJ Yeley, Reagan Smith, and Paul Menard.
"I need a ruling on the 8," Mikey said.
"Get that for me, Auto," Bobby requested.
"I believe it's 55, 8, 07," Ty said.
"That's what I believe too, but no one's told the 8."
"Good. They just told him. Come on up there. Come up behind the 9." A moment later, Ty added. "Coming to one to go when you get around here. One to go. The 8, 07, and 88 behind you there."
"All right, make sure your tires are cleaned off, belt are tight."
Ty said Kasey Kahne would probably be "the best guy to shove and to hang onto" as he had the freshest tires. Kahne's #9 was just in front of the #55.
The field prepared for a green/white/checkered. Gordon led, Mikey was 8th, McDowell was 21st, and David was 30th. Carl Edwards spun out Gordon. Ty warned Mikey that cars were checking up.
"Spinning down below you. Keep coming, keep coming. No caution. Keep coming. Inside, both sides. Clear high, clear high, clear high. Clear high. Clear low. The 9's with you now. Clear all clear, clear all clear. Outside, outside. Three-wide. Clear to the bottom, clear to the bottom. One more. Stay low, stay low. Big crash behind you."
The caution had come out right at the end for a large crash. Clint Bowyer had gotten into David Ragan when going three-wide. They corrected themselves, but then Travis Kvapil got into Sam Hornish Jr going three-wide and sent Hornish into the #55. A number of others were collected.
"All right, man. Come on. The best you can," said Ty.
"I maintained a reasonable speed, and they're all passing me," Mikey commented.
"Yeah. Bobby, let them know so we can," Ty told the crew chief.
"That was the checkered, right?" asked the driver.
"Yeah, 10-4, 10-4."
"Wow, we didn't do anything wrong. We did all we could do. Drove our ass off. Put ourself in a position. Just kind of a bad deal. We all crashed."
"Yeah, I'm just aggravated for you when the car is like that. That car just wouldn't go. What happened over there?"
"Oh, they started wrecking, then they just really never stopped. Where am I supposed to go to?"
"I don't know. Can't help you there," Bobby replied.
"We need to spend some time at the trailer. I mean, I really think, if they freeze the field and just look at the speed I was going, which was plenty fast enough to be reasonable. And we just stay there, I reckon. Cause, like, the 44 and a bunch of them passed me when I was going a reasonable speed. I never stopped. I never stopped."
Kyle Busch won. Mikey's finishing position is uncertain at this time, as is the results for David and McDowell. Come back later for more information.
