Mikey parked at Richmond by Kellyanne Lynch
3 May 2008
NASCAR parked Michael Waltrip's #55 Napa Auto Parts Toyota toward the end of the Crown Royal 400, tonight's Sprint Cup series race at Richmond. Mikey's throttle stuck following a collision between him and Casey Mears, and the sanctioning body penalised him severely for this. The #55 was scored in 37th, 58 laps down. Michael Waltrip Racing drivers David Reutimann and Michael McDowell finished 22nd (3 laps down) and 40th (152 laps down) respectively.
Mikey qualified 27th for tonight's race. His drivers David and McDowell started 14th and 29th respectively.
"All right, Bobby, do you have a copy?" spotter Ty Norris asked.
Crew chief Bobby Kennedy said he heard him loud and clear.
Ty asked him if there were any static.
"Nah, not at all."
"Cool."
"You got a copy, Mike?" a crew member asked.
"One two, hello?" Mikey came over the radio.
"Yes sir, got you loud and clear, bud," Bobby replied. "All clear."
Mikey said he heard everyone well. He said a couple people, including Jeff Gordon, had seen his rotors on his brake camera on television.
"Well, it don't matter. It's not like we're dominating yet."
"Jeff Gordon asked, 'Did you have that at Phoenix, because you outrun the shit out of me.'"
"Did you tell him the truth?" Bobby asked.
"Hell yeah! I'm sure the truth confuses him more than lying does," Mikey replied.
"I bet it does."
"I said, 'It's also sitting right there in that car in front of you.'"
"Uh, okay," Bobby laughed. "All right, make sure all our switches are on. All our fans and blowers."
"All set." A moment later, Mikey asked, "Is this the same pressures I had yesterday afternoon, or is it a little lower?"
Bobby said it was a little less on the left and on the minimum on the right sides. "And we should have some room to go need be on left sides." He told his driver, once the #55 got rolling, that his pit road speed should be 4900. He told his driver what pit box they were in, after the #00 and #01 on pit road.
"They just now got to pit road speed. They had trucks and cars and stuff," Ty told his driver.
"I'll go along with 49," Mikey assessed.
"10-4. 4900."
"All right, make sure to get your tires good and cleaned off here. Heat in your brakes," Bobby advised. "All right, pull those belts good and tight. Have a good night." He told the crew to have heads up in the pits.
The green flag waved at 7:50pm ET with Denny Hamlin leading the field.
"All right, buddy. Be ready. The pace car is off. Ready? Green green green. Everybody's straight, everybody's straight."
Hamlin led the field to the stripe to lead the first lap. Ty warned Mikey a car was outside, then cleared him.
"Still inside," Ty warned as Mikey was 28th on the first lap. "Still there. Clear if you need it, clear if you need it. Back inside, inside. Clear if you need it. Still there. Clear of the 66. He's down there. Inside inside, inside. Inside, clear low, clear low. Inside, inside. 07. Inside. Got two coming. Why don't you hang here for a minute. Still there, 83. Clear low if you need it. Clear low."
Mikey was 30th by lap 5.
"Still outside. Still there, still there, still there. Clear. Clear half back to the 31."
The #55 was 29th one lap later.
"Still clear half back. Still clear," Ty warned. "Inside, inside. All right, you're clear. He's dive bombing it into the corners there. Still clear, still clear. Still there. Still down there. Still there. Still there. Still there on your corner. Still there. Down there with the 31."
On lap 12, Mikey scuffed the wall. He went to 30th with Jeff Burton's pass.
"Inside, inside by a fender. Inside. It's going to be clear now. Clear, clear. All set. Clear. He's in low. He's there. Inside, got a nose inside."
Mikey was 29th on lap 14. He had passed Travis Kvapil. David was 13th, and McDowell was 28th.
"Still there, Michael. Clear now, all clear. Way to start, bud. Good job. Looking inside. To your door - 28. Clear behind him, all clear behind him. You're clear about four back, about four back."
Lap 18 saw the #55 in 30th with Kvapil's pass.
"It's skating the right front too much," Mikey complained.
"All right, 10-4. I'll make an adjustment on the next stop," Bobby replied.
"Still clear two back to the 38," Ty said.
Bobby said Mikey was three-tenths quicker than the next five or six cars, just before Mikey passed McDowell for 29th on lap 23.
"Clear there, if you need to bale out. Clear one back. Clear low if you need it," Ty observed. "Clear there, still clear, still clear. Half back to the 38. Clear if you need it. Still outside. Clear now, clear. Still clear."
Passing Regan Smith by lap 28 put the #55 in 28th.
"45, 45. That's a 60 in front of you," Bobby read off lap times. "Give me temps when you get a chance."
"Still there, still there," Ty warned on lap 33. "Still inside. You're clear."
Mikey picked up 27th from Kvapil on lap 35 but lost the spot one lap later when Kvapil passed him back.
"38's trying to get down there inside. Clear. Leader's at the line now. There's about ten cars between us."
"55 that lap, 55. 65 in the front," Bobby said.
"Clear, clear."
Lap 38 saw Mikey back in 27th.
"60, 60. Same as the leader. He's in traffic."
"Looking back inside, looking inside. Back to clear. Clear, all clear."
By lap 42, he picked up 26th from Matt Kenseth.
"Clear. Nice job. Line now."
"60, 60. Leader 50. 70 out the front side. Go get 'em," Bobby encouraged. "45, 45. Second fastest car on the track that lap."
On lap 44, Mikey passed Kvapil for 25th.
"Three-wide, three-wide. Back to two-wide. Clear. Hell of a move!" Ty praised.
He was 24th on lap 45.
"Still in there a little bit. Still in there. Clear, clear."
Mikey passed Kurt Busch on lap 49 for 23rd.
"50. Same as the leader, same as the leader," Bobby said. "45. Damn good lap!"
"Clear all clear," Ty said on lap 54. "Nice job!"
Passing David Ragan had put the #55 in 22nd.
"50, 50. Good lap!" Bobby praised.
"Still there," Ty warned. "Clear right there, clear right there. That's the 10 and 16 in front of you. Back to clear. Clear two back."
On lap 59, Mikey got around Casey Mears.
"Leader's at the line now," Ty noted.
"60. Leader 67."
The #55 passed Patrick Carpentier's #10 on lap 62.
"Clear the 10. All clear," Ty stated.
"59. Same as your leader," Bobby continued with lap times. "58. Same as the leader. Caution's out."
"Hell of a job, man. Hell of a job," Ty praised.
The yellow flag waved for the first time on lap 66 for Johnny Sauter losing a tire in Turn 4. Brian Vickers received the free pass.
Bobby said he would make an adjustment by half a pound on both sides.
"Okay," Mikey replied.
Bobby told the crew they would go with four tires and told Mikey to stop short for the #26. "You will have a straight shot in. The 01 is a lap down."
"I'm sorry about that," the driver apologised. "They're good. They're 210 and 220."
"That's okay," Bobby replied.
"It's kind of more intense where I gotta run."
"It looks like that. You're doing a good job. Four tires, guys. Four tires."
Ty reminded Mikey of speeds. "Come on, guys. Everything tight now. Let's go. Pit road now, Bobby. He's yours."
"All right. Here we go. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Right here, right here. Wheels straight, put on the brakes."
After the stop, Ty said everything looked okay. "48 looks like he blew by about five miles an hour faster on pit road, but that's okay."
"Tires look good, tires look good," Bobby told his driver.
"It'll be one to go. Watch the lappers coming under you," Ty warned. "About ten more. Five more. Not going, not going. Boy, that was big. Not going. One to go again."
Lap 73 saw the restart with Hamlin leading. Mikey was 20th, McDowell was 30th, and David was 12th.
"Clear one back," Ty said. "Clear both sides, whatever you need. Clear one back to the 6. Inside now, inside. Clear if you need it. Inside. Clear there, clear. Inside inside, the 6. Inside. Split three wide in front of you. 84 inside. Clear there, whatever you need. All clear. Looking back inside. Back inside, inside."
Passing AJ Allmendinger on lap 77 put the #55 in 19th.
"Inside. 6 inside again," Ty warned. "Clear, clear. Half back. Looking low, just looking. Inside, inside. Back inside. Three-wide, two-wide."
Mikey was 20th the next time around the track when Allmendinger repassed.
"You're clear there. Clear half back to the 2, clear half back to the 2. Inside. Still inside, the 2 car. All by himself. Clear low if you need it. Clear one back to the 31."
On lap 82, Mikey was 21st. He was 22nd one lap later.
"Still outside, still there. Still outside, on your corner. Clear, all clear. Single file. All right, bud, you can get them."
David was 11th by lap 82. Mikey was 22nd, and McDowell was 29th.
"Clear two back," Ty continued. "Still there, 45. Clear, clear."
Passing Kurt Busch on lap 89 put the #55 in 21st.
"Clear. Whatever you need. All clear. Clear one back to the 2," Ty said. "Back inside - the 2 car. Inside. All clear."
"44. Leader 34," Bobby gave lap times on lap 94. "70, 70. Leader 35. Let me know about your car when you get a chance. 55 that lap. Good lap."
"Got one looking inside. The 31," Ty warned on lap 99. "Inside. 31's inside."
On lap 100, Mikey lost a spot to Burton. He was 22nd.
"Clear right there half back to the 2. Inside. Inside the 2. Inside."
Lap 102 saw the #55 lose another spot, this time to Kurt Busch.
"Looking inside. Inside - the 38. You're clear two back to the 5."
Mikey fell to 24th on lap 104 with David Gilliland's pass.
"Just can't... it's just pushing," Mikey told his crew chief.
"Okay, 10-4, 10-4," Bobby responded.
"5 car's gonna have a look inside. Inside. Clear, clear. Looking inside, inside. Back to clear. Inside the 5, inside."
On lap 112, Casey Mears passed. Mikey was now 25th.
"Clear right there. Clear two back to the 17. Still clear one back. Still clear. Three-wide, three-wide. Still three. 48 there. Leader's at the line now. Clear right there. You're clear. 17's inside, inside."
Mikey picked up 24th from Matt Kenseth on lap 116.
"You're clear behind him if you need it. Leader... now."
Kenseth repassed three laps later.
"Still there, still there. Clear, clear."
Bobby said he would make a right side air adjustment on the next stop. "64 that last lap. That was a good one."
Mikey was 24th on lap 124, having passed Elliott Sadler. David was 15th, and McDowell was 31st.
"45."
"Still clear. Still clear half back. Inside."
The second caution was on lap 127 for debris. Carpentier received the free pass.
"Good break for us. Leader's three back," Ty commented.
Bobby called for an air adjustment and asked if Mikey wanted wedge. "How's youre entry? Is it tight there?"
"It's mainly tight in the centre. Wedge just usually messes up my grip." Mikey said he just wanted air. "If I turn better, it'll be a lot easier."
Bobby said he'd pull some out of the right front and put some air in the right rear.
The leaders pit, and Hamlin won the race off pit road.
"4900, all the way. 4900," Bobby directed after the #55's stop.
"4900," Ty repeated.
"Can you get NASCAR to work on this timing and scoring here? I can't get nothing here," Bobby requested of a crew member.
"All right, bud. One to go when you get here. One to go," Ty noted. "All right, here come the lappers. They'll be coming under you in just a second."
Hamlin led the restart on lap 132. Mikey was 27th, David was 19th, and McDowell was 31st.
"Green green green," said Ty. "Slow one on the bottom. Inside - the 48. Three-wide. 48's all the way on the bottom. 48's inside. Still three-wide. Still down there now. Two-wide. Inside, inside."
On lap 136, McDowell travelled up the track into Vickers' #83. Vickers lost a number of spots but saved it. McDowell was now the first car one lap down.
"Clear two back, clear two back. Clear there, clear. Outside. Still out there, still there. Still outside, still there."
The third caution was on lap 139 for Juan Pablo Montoya's spin. He got loose and went around on his own. Jeff Gordon received the free pass.
"Clear there, clear. Spin right in front of you. All the way to the bottom if you can. There you go. Nice job," Ty guided and praised.
"These brakes are jumbling up on me. I've got rotor warp," Mikey complained.
"All right, 10-4," Bobby mumbled.
"Got two or three behind us, Bobby. Stay out?" Ty asked.
Bobby wanted to wait to see what the leaders did.
"Okay. Come back with that same air. I might have been better. Maybe half a turn on that trackbar. I'm coming."
With the driver's direction, the #55 pit.
"Middle of the back straightaway. You should be in good shape," Ty told the team.
"4900," Bobby said after the stop.
"Only lost two this time," Mikey commented. "I lost four last time. But mother... I don't understand... I don't even have a clue what's going on."
"10-4, 10-4," Bobby replied.
"I'm tire of 10-4 too, man. It's every week." After a pause, he added, "But 10-4's better than nothing. Thank you."
"All right, buddy. One to go. One to go when you get to the line. Got about a half dozen lappers coming under you," Ty noted. "All right, buddy, you'll be coming to the green."
"Ain't no way I'll get any track position," Mikey complained.
Ty called the green flag at lap 144. Hamlin led. Mikey was 27th, David was 19th, and McDowell was 31st.
"Looking low. Inside. Inside, the 48. Checking up up top. Clear. Still outside. Still there, still there, still there. Clear there. Clear."
Mikey was 28th one lap into the run.
"All clear. Whatever you need. All clear. Clear low. Still got em outside. Still outside."
On lap 148, Mikey was up to 25th.
"Still outside, still outside. Got one looking inside. Clear low. Still outside. Still there to your corner, still. Looking low, the 24. Still on the bottom, the 24. The 41's down there also. Clear there all clear. Clear two back."
Two laps later, the #55 was 26th. He regained it on lap 152.
"Still down there. Still there. Inside. Still there, still there. Still there. Clear, clear. Clear the 70. Still clear."
Mikey picked up 24th on lap 154. David was 22nd, and McDowell was 31st.
"Clear one back to the 19. Inside, inside. Still there inside. Inside, inside. Still inside. 26 is down there. You're in the middle, in the middle. Still outside. Clear high, clear high. The 41's still there inside, inside. Still there. Clear, clear."
Mikey fell to 27th by lap 162.
"Still there. Clear, clear."
He was back up to 25th two laps later.
"Clear half back to the 41. Clear low if you need it. Clear. 22 dropped off. Still out there. Still there. Clear, clear."
Mikey was 24th on lap 169. Bobby gave lap times.
"A run on the bottom - the 41. Inside to your door," Ty said. "Clear there. Clear half back to the 28. Inside. Back inside. Clear."
By lap 175, Mikey was back to 25th with Reed Sorenson's pass.
"Clear about five back to the 22."
"Tight as hell," Mikey reported on lap 176.
"10-4, 10-4."
"Try something..." The rest of his words were swallowed by static.
"That's going to be the leader in your mirror - the 11," Ty warned. "Still clear half back. Looking low. Inside. Clear there, clear."
Mikey lost the lead lap on lap 182. He was 26th.
"Still out there. Still there," Ty warned. "Clear, clear. All right, bud. That 28's the dog."
Mikey said something about Turn 3 or speeds or debris. I couldn't tell which.
"24 flat," Bobby said. "24 flat.
"75, 75.
"80. Leader's a 70.
"70. Leader's 60."
"Clear low, clear low. Keep rolling, keep rolling. No caution. That 10 car's inside."
Mikey had bounced off the wall on lap 195.
"Inside, inside," Ty warned. "Still there, still there. Clear, clear. Inside, the 88. Clear there, clear. You're clear three back to the 88."
"23.80, 80," Bobby read off lap times.
"Clear one back," Ty said. On lap 195, Mikey was 27th. "Still clear one back to the 88. Just hang in there, brother. Just hang in there. The guys who haven't pitted yet are about to pit soon."
Bobby told Mikey he was turning good laps.
"Inside the 88. 1 car's inside with him. Clear behind him if you need it. Clear three back. All clear. Spin back straightaway. Lot of smoke. Back it down. Lot of smoke. Caution's out. Come through the top," Ty guided.
Regan Smith spun Allmendinger in Turn 2, drawing the fourth caution on lap 202. David Gilliland received the free pass.
"All right, get caught up. Second time by." Bobby said he would put the left front down and put the trackbar up, because it was worse.
Mikey said Bobby hadn't adjusted right.
"That would be affirmative on that stop there. So bad stop and bad adjustment. No wonder I"m last."
"Not coming this time, not coming this time," Ty said. He told the crew to have a good stop.
"01's behind us on the track, right? 01 behind us, 00?"
Bobby said he thought the #00 was behind them.
"Yeah, he's behind us," Mikey replied.
Bobby told Dwayne to go two up.
The #55 pit with lapped traffic.
"Halfway, halfway," said Ty.
Bobby said, once the cars caught up, he'd tell Mikey who he were racing.
"It don't matter. I'm not racing anyone," Mikey complained.
"Sorry about them pit stops, but there ain't a damn thing I can do about it right now."
"Well fuck. Bullshit. It started a long time ago, and it pisses me off."
Lap 212 saw the free pass with Hamlin leading. Mikey was 27th, David was 24th, and McDowell was 30th. Allmendinger had stayed out to lead one lap.
Ty told his driver it would be one to go soon. "All right, man. Be ready, be ready. Pace car's off. Pace car's off. Go go go, green green green. Outside, still outside. Still outside. Still there." Ty warned Mikey about a slow car on top. "45 clear, all clear. A run inside - the 24. Clear behind him right there if you need it. Clear two back to the 31. He's low - 31. Inside, inside. Clear there, clear there. One back to the 83. One in back, three wide in the corner. Clear all clear. Inside, inside. Inside. 83's down there. Inside as well. Clear all clear. Inside, inside. Outside. Clear high now, clear high. Clear there, clear."
The fifth caution took place on lap 219 for Brian Vickers and Paul Menard. Menard went up into Vickers in Turn 4. Sorenson received the free pass.
"Caution's out, caution's out," said Ty.
"I don't know what you done to it now. It's so loose," Mikey said the car wouldn't turn. "I feel like I'm on an island. Nobody would tell you nothing."
Bobby said he went up two rounds on the trackbar.
"It just won't turn at all." He said it was like the start of practice. "I know there ain't nobody around here who can tell me how to fix that, so do whatever you want."
Bobby said they'd pit after the leaders.
Mikey said the car was best on the first run. "I don't know what to say, because I don't know what you did or didn't do. It's sort of a mystery to me. So do whatever the f... do whatever the heck you want. At this point, I don't know if you want me to pit or not."
"Yes. I already told you that. Next time by."
Ty told him to pit. "Four tires, four tires."
"On the sign, on the sign."
"On pit road."
"5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Right here, right here."
After the stop, Bobby said they were back to a half pound like the start of the race.
"Okay," Mikey replied.
"All right, bud," said Ty. "There's one to go when you get here. One to go. If any of the IT guys can look at the radar, there's rain coming."
"All right, 10-4," Bobby replied. "It is. We're trying to change that. According to this radar, but it's lied to me before."
Hamlin led the lap 227 restart. Mikey was 29th, David was 24th, and McDowell was 31st.
"Still outside," warned Ty. "Still outside. Still there."
"70's lame up there on the top side. You're in a good place," somebody said.
"Still outside. Still outside. Just one of them now. Still outside. Come down, come down, come down, come down. Nice. Great job, Michael."
The sixth caution was for a violent crash. Dave Blaney rammed Carl Edwards, who got into the back of JJ Yeley. Carpentier got spun when the field bottled, and a number of cars got into him. McDowell was collected. Drivers involved included McDowell, Regan Smith, Kurt Busch, Patrick Carpentier, Matt Kenseth, Jeff Burton, David Gilliland, Juan Pablo Montoya, Jimmie Johnson, Johnny Sauter, and JJ Yeley.
"All right, did you flat spot your tires or anything?" Bobby asked.
"No, but it's a piece of shit. It still won't turn at all," Mikey replied.
Ty said they were throwing the red flag on lap 230 at 9:36pm.
"How many did that get, Ty?" Mikey asked.
Ty and Bobby came up with a list of cars: 38, 10, 96, 2, 42, 17, 01, and 70. "31 spun, but I don't think he hit anything," Ty added.
"I know the 10 was involved in the start of it, but I don't know what happened," somebody said.
"Looks like the 99 got into the 96 on the back straightaway, and it all broke loose behind him. The 22 came up into the 96, and then the 99 clipped the right rear of the 96 and put him in the wall," Bobby explained.
Mikey said the car felt like it did when he didn't like it in practice at Phoenix. "It won't turn, and I can't drive it right. The reason why I'm so fast up top is because you don't have to turn," Mikey spoke in a low voice. "I don't know what to do. It seems like I'm kind of stuck a little bit."
"Yeah, 10-4."
"Sorry I got mean. I didn't mean that by."
"Hell, I didn't even hear it."
"You might have been listening to it longer than the rest of them." He said he knew it wasn't possible to take air out of the right front but thought that would help. "Maybe out of both fronts would help. I can't tell." He said it turned well after a few laps, then the back was really bad and it wouldn't turn.
"Was the back still bad these last four or five laps?"
"No, it seemed all right."
Bobby said the pressures were back to the start of the race.
"I don't remember thinking I could go anywhere, but it got really bad the time I got lapped. It felt like I had a bad right front tire, like it blew up."
"It did. Correct."
"I wish I could tell you I could do something about it, but I can't. It won't turn." He said, after a few laps, he would run over the cushion and just about crashed. "We'll see what we got now."
Ty asked if they were staying out. He had been on the other channel.
Mikey said he wanted to stay out.
"As long as you don't run through anything, that will be our plan," Bobby replied.
"Looks like the 28 will be the lucky dog, and the 44 will be next. I'm sure he'll want to stay out as well, so that's cool."
Bobby read off who were in front of them. "They're saying rain fifty miles out."
"They got all that new speedy dry in Turn 3, and they're having a really hard time getting it up," Ty said at 9:51pm after a long pause on the radio during the red flag.
"All right, bud. Crank it back up," Ty said five minutes later. "All right. Are you running?"
"I am," Mikey replied.
"10-4."
"42's moving up to pit," Mikey tattled. "That's not allowed. If somebody wants to rat him out, that's another lap."
"We'll rat him out," Bobby decided.
"He's going to the garage," Ty explained.
"Moving up to go to the garage is okay," Mikey concluded.
Ty said some of the leaders were pitting, and that would move them up. He noted that pit road was still closed. "All right, pit road will be open this time. I'll let you know what they're doing."
"We're staying out. We only have three green laps," Bobby said.
Ty told the crew chief he knew they were staying out, but he was hoping the leaders would come so he could see what they're doing.
McDowell pit and returned to the track with barribond on the rear of his #00.
"Give you an update. We've got nineteen cars on the lead lap. Nineteen. And it looks like nine one lap down. Excuse me, ten. 19 lead lap, 10 down.
"Working lap 235 right now. 235."
"All right, bud. You'll be coming around with one to go. One to go. You're running p24," Ty said.
The green flag returned on lap 238 with Hamlin leading. Mikey was 24th, David was 20th, and McDowell was 29th.
"Still outside, still outside," Ty warned. "Still outside. Still outside, still outside. Clear, clear. Nice corner. Clear. Clear two back to the 16. 24's got a run. Beneath you there. Inside. Still inside - 9. Still inside. Got the 88 trying to come down with him. Clear three back to the 07. Got a run on the inside. Inside. Clear down behind him if you need it. Clear about two back to the 12. Still clear one back. Looking inside. Inside - the 12. Inside. Still inside. Still there, still there. Clear one back, clear one back."
On lap 252, David was 21st. He had been the first driver one lap down, but Bobby Labonte passed him. Mikey was still 24th.
"Back inside - the 12. Got the 29 down there with him. All clear. Looking inside, inside. Still there. Got the 29 down there with him and the 20 right on your bumper. You're clear right there. One back to the 20. Inside. Outside. Both sides. Still there. Clear high. Inside. Clear three back to the 19 and 26. Nice job, brother. You're pulling away from them."
"40, 40. Good lap," praised Bobby. "45, 45."
"Got a crash behind us, crash behind us," Ty warned. "Cars right in the middle of the race track. Uh, you need to go up top. There you go. Now you can go to the middle now."
The seventh caution was on lap 260 for a wreck involving Allmendinger and McDowell in Turn 3. Bobby Labonte received the free pass.
"All right, get caught up now. We're really going to need to pit this time."
"I don't really want to, but we will," Mikey replied.
Bobby said they'd watch the 44 and 22 in front of them.
"I just run some of my best laps, so if the leaders don't pit, I'll just stay out and see what I got."
"It's worth a chance. We're one stop out right now. These other guys may be coming."
"The leaders are coming. We have another lap to think about it," Ty said.
Mikey asked his fastest lap. Bobby said 22.70 on lap 73. He said they could stay out or pit. They could take a chance.
Bobby said they'd pit and put on four tires.
"I'll stay out. Reuti stayed out. I figure I can protect him or pass him. Do you mind?"
Bobby said he was cool either way. "You have five or six lap fresher tires than him. You were just a little quicker than him right there before the caution came out."
"What happened in that wreck, Ty?" Mikey asked.
"We should have both... us and the 44 should both have the caution," Ty said. "You just want to take the lane he doesn't take?"
"Yeah."
"All right, restart's going to be on you," Ty said.
With 134 to go, Mikey and David started at the tail end of the lead lap. Hamlin immediately passed, and Mikey fought David to stay ahead.
"Clear there, clear," Ty said. "Inside. Clear, clear. Clear three back, two back to that 22. He is a lapper. Inside the 22. Inside. 18's with him. Inside."
Mikey had restarted 20th but lost a spot to Blaney by 131 laps to go.
"Inside, inside," Ty warned. "Two more coming. The 8 inside. Inside - the 88. Clear half back to the 19. Inside, inside. The 1 car is inside. Clear there. Clear two back. That 6 is inside, inside. 16's looking outside. Clear high, clear high."
Mikey was 22nd with 125 to go with Ragan's pass.
"Inside the 9. Inside. Clear there. Clear one back to the 29. Got a run inside - 29. Clear right there behind the 29. Clear two back to the 20."
"23.30, 23.30," Bobby read off lap times.
"Inside - the 20. Inside. Clear there. Clear two back to the 24. Inside, inside. Clear behind the 24 if you need it."
"45, 45.
"43, 43.
"45."
"12's inside. Back to clear. Inside - the 12. Back to clear. Clear half back, clear half back. 19's looking low. Inside. Clear one back to the 19."
"50, 50. Leader 25.
"50."
"Outside, outside. Clear behind him. Still two back to the 31."
By 106 to go, Mikey was 23rd with Sadler's pass. McDowell was in the garage, and David was 24th.
"60."
"Clear one back to the 31. That 31, you're going to be clear behind him. 99's got a run. One back. Inside. Clear about ten back."
"80.
"75."
"Still clear five back. 95 to go. Stay smooth. We're still running p23."
"80.
"70. Leader 45."
"He's in there. The 16 inside. All clear behind him. All clear ten back."
"80."
David went a second lap down with 89 laps to go. Sam Hornish Jr, who ran into him the day before, ran side by side in front of the leader despite being three laps down. Hamlin moved him out of the way.
"Doing five. Still got a straightaway, over a straightaway over the leader."
"80, 80." Bobby said they had 25 laps until they would have to pit. "70, 70. Leader a 50. Leader at the line now.
"75.
"80.
"70, 70."
"Still clear three back."
"80."
"You've got that slow one on the bottom."
"85."
"Clear right there. How many more, Bobby?"
"Ten. Uh, nine away, nine," Bobby replied after a pause. "85."
"Clear three back to the 43."
By lap 308, David was 25th after Scott Riggs had passed.
"43's going to have a run inside, inside. Clear four back."
"Five more laps to pit. Five. Lap times are really good right there, considering we're spotting these guys twenty five laps on those tires." Bobby called for four tires on the stop. "88."
"All right, that 41's inside. He'll be by himself. There you go." Ty cleared him two back.
"Two laps, two," Bobby walked on him.
"Inside."
"Next time, next time."
"Are we coming now? Bobby, are we coming now?"
"Next time, bud. Next time."
"All right. Going to be looking low. 4900, 4900. 4900 at the cone. 4900."
"5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Get a tearoff, Ron," Bobby guided. The #55 pit with 67 to go. "Go go go go. 49 out."
"4900, all the way to the line," Ty reminded. "All right, as hard as you can go. You've got two of them coming to your outside. Clear behind the 24. Still there, still there. Clear out, clear out."
David had already pit and was three laps down in 29th.
"23 flat, 23 flat."
"Still there. Clear. Clear."
With 61 laps to go, David was 27th, and Mikey was 28th. They were both three laps down.
"Clear, clear. Still there, still there. Clear out. Still outside. Clear. Clear high. Clear low. Clear high."
Mikey was 26th and David was 27th with 57 to go. Both were three laps down.
"Clear the 44. Still there. Still outside. Clear."
"23 flat. Good lap right there, man. Good lap.
"23.10.
"15, 23.15."
"Still there inside. Still there. Clear low, clear low. All clear. Clear, clear."
"35, 35."
"Still there. Clear. 50 laps to go, 50 laps to go."
"The leaders got about fifteen or twenty laps before they're coming. Be on your toes, Ty," Bobby told the spotter. "30."
"Clear all clear."
The eighth caution was on lap 354. Casey Mears appeared to get up into Mikey, and the #55 stayed in the #5 for quite some time.
"Motherfucker! ***damnit!" Bobby yelled.
"Well my throttle hung a little bit there," Mikey apologised. "Sorry about that."
"Yeah. Damn it! That's damage."
Mikey said he didn't think they got the radiator. Bobby asked Ty about the right side and said the left side didn't look bad.
"The steering wheel didn't move much," Mikey said. "As long as I didn't get the radiator, it will be all right. Let's pit the first time by."
"No, you're going to be coming to the garage, Michael," Ty said. NASCAR parked him.
"My throttle hung, y'all," Mikey told his crew. "I've been a pretty mild mannered guy. All I did was hit the throttle instead of the brake. I was confused about the collision. I have never been a guy to wreck anyone. I didn't do nothing wrong."
"When we get through there, Michael, turn left," Ty instructed.
"Tell him it's an awful stiff penalty for somebody who's never done anything like that," Mikey complained. "That's a pretty stiff penalty."
"Yeah, I agree."
"I didn't do nothing on purpose. I just got confused for a second. What do they want me to do?"
"They want you to go to the trailer, Michael, and they want to see you over there afterwards," Ty said.
"Where'd the car go?" somebody asked.
"To the truck," someone replied.
"Go ahead and get everything picked up here. Get everything loaded up."
Racing resumed with 40 to go without Mikey. By 21 to go, David was 24th and three laps down.
"Outside, outside. Still there," warned #44 spotter Shawn Reutimann. "Still there, outside. Outside, 16 looking outside, outside. Still there. Outside, still there. Clear behind the 16."
Meanwhile, Hamlin developed a flat tire. Dale Earnhardt Jr took the lead.
"28 right there with you. Got new tires. Lead lap car. 28 right there with you, inside. Clear all around. 19 to go. 19." Shawn warned David about the slow #77 of Hornish Jr. "Inside, clear. Inside, still there. Clear all around, clear all around. Nice and smooth. Clear by 20. 77 coming back to you. Two ahead of you. Outside. All clear. Clear by two. Got fourteen laps to go. Outside. Still there. Outside, still there. Still there, outside. Got the 11 car stuck in the middle here, coming back quick. 11 car black car in the middle. Outside, still in the middle. Outside, still there, still there, still there. Clear. Inside, inside. All clear, all clear."
The tenth caution was for Hamlin blowing a tire
"Caution's out," Shawn said. "11 just took it all the way to the fence there.
"Yeah, he must have cut a right front tire," David commented.
"Yeah, 10-4. They're going to hold him two laps."
"10-4."
"We should line up right behind the 77 on this restart."
"You want tires? Let's get em?" crew chief Ryan Pemberton asked.
"You wanna come?" David asked.
Ryan told him to pit this time.
"4900 and second. The 77's coming in."
"Come on, guys, we've got to get out in front of them."
"7, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Stop."
"16's going to be the last car on the lead lap," Shawn said.
Ryan said they were racing the 77 and 09 behind them. They talked about the 11 and realised he was a lap ahead of them.
Earnhardt Jr led ther estart with five laps to go.
"Clear by two, back to the 7. Clear by five. No pressure. Not racing anyone in front of you."
With 3 to go, Kyle Busch wrecked Earnhardt Jr for the lead. The eleventh caution came out. Clint Bowyer got around Busch before the yellow flag waved.
"The leader's wrecking, the leader's wrecking. Go low, go low. 88 high against the corner. Kyle took out the 88," Shawn told his driver.
"All right, David, Scott just wanted to let you know he wanted to race the 22," Shawn relayed.
"Tell him don't worry," David replied. "I ain't going to screw with him. I'll just stay right there behind him."
"All right, it's going to be a green white checkered. We're going to be racing the 09 behind us, the 77 behind us, and the 11 behind us," Shawn said. "Closest one is the 77 five back."
"What position are we in?" David asked.
"We're 22nd. 22nd."
"That's better than I thought we were."
"Yeah, 10-4, 10-4. When Michael and those guys wrecked, if they'd gone another ten laps."
Ryan apologised for staying out when David and Mikey had stayed out and everyone else had pit.
"If it's any consolation, I thought it was the right call at the time too. It just bit us. Don't worry about it," David replied.
Ryan said it would cost them five spots. He said they would have had to outrun the leaders. "Anyway, I appreciate you not yelling at me too much. I'll let you punch me in the shoulder later."
"Nah, nah. We'll get it," David replied. "I'm a screw-up too. At the end of the year, if you're keeping score, I'll probably do it a lot more than you do."
Ryan told him one bad run ruined their day. "I overadjusted or underadjusted. I can't remember what that was." He said the goal was to beat the 09 and the 77 on the green white checkered.
"So, did you get with the 01? The 01 is racing Blaney and Riggs. Make sure the 01 isn't doing anything crazy," David requested.
"Okay, 10-4."
"We need to let him go or no?"
"Nah, just hold your own. You're faster than them. It's be one more to go. We've got some beer cans over the fence since Dale Jr got wrecked."
"One of them hit the 66 car, man. It just..." David replied. "Who got him, the 18?"
"What?"
"Who got him? The 18?"
"Yeah, he's making fans." Shawn commented. "One to go when you get back."
"The colour of the beer can is light blue in colour," David said. "Light blue."
"Miller Lite?"
"Yeah, apparently that's the beer of choice to throw."
"Going to have the 88 coming around here."
David was 22nd going into the green white checkered. "Clear by five. No pressure. Coming to the checkered."
Bowyer went on to win. Mikey finished 37th, 58 laps down. David was 22nd and three laps down. McDowell was 40th, 152 laps down.
