Mikey 30th in Atlanta by Kellyanne Lynch
9 March 2008
A "really, really, really, really loose" #55 Napa Auto Parts Toyota finished four laps down in 30th in the Kobalt Tools 500, today's Sprint Cup race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Michael Waltrip's drivers David Reutimann and Dale Jarrett finished 20th and 26th respectively. Kyle Busch picked up Toyota's first win in the Cup series.
"Anybody got a copy?" spotter Mark Green asked at 2:06pm ET.
"Yeah, go ahead, Mark," someone replied.
Mark said he was just making sure people were on the radio. "Are we the fifth stall in? Is that correct?"
"10-4."
"Thank you."
"We're between the 17 and the 96."
"Thank you," Mark repeated. "I gotcha loud and clear."
"Hey, Mark, you got a copy?" crew chief Paul Andrews asked.
"I got you loud and clear," Mark replied.
"All right. We're going to go on channel two today. So flip onto channel two."
Cars rolled off pit road at 2:11pm. Jeff Gordon led the field to the green flag seven minutes later. Mikey rolled off 27th, David was 30th, and Dale started 43rd with the championship provisional. Outside polesitter Dale Earnhardt Jr led the first lap while the #55 lost a spot. Mikey was 31st the next time around the track and 32nd one circuit later. Lap 6 saw him in in 38th. He almost got into David Gilliland, then he scraped the wall. He was 39th the next time around the track.
On lap 14, Mikey picked up 38th. He got around Travis Kvapil during the next circuit to gain another spot. Joe Nemechek, who hit the wall on lap 14, dropped back and allowed Mikey to move into 35th.
The Napa Auto Parts Camry fell off the lead lap on lap 23. Mikey was 35th, Dale was 31st, and David was 27th. JJ Yeley pit on lap 21 with issues, then had to return for a pass-through penalty after speeding on pit road. This allowed the #55 to move into 33rd. By lap 34, all three Michael Waltrip Racing cars were lapped.
"Clear all around, clear all around," Mark said on lap 36. He warned him that the third place car was coming along the inside line. "Clear all around, clear all around. Clear high, clear high. Caution's out, caution's out. Got debris on the race track - Turn 2."
The yellow flag waved for the first time on lap 38. Brian Vickers received the free pass.
Paul said he was going to adjust right front air pressure and wedge. He asked if he should pull a rubber out of the right side too.
"I don't know," Mikey replied. "It's so tight on that right front tire. I don't know what that will do. Feels like the right front tire's way blowed up. That's first of all. Second of all, it's got no side grip." He said wedge might help, but they definitely needed to work on the right front.
Paul said pulling out the rubber they had put in earlier.
"Well do it. I don't care," Mikey replied. He reiterated his trouble with the right front.
"It'll be clear coming in. The 17 will be behind you," Paul noted.
"4100 at the line," reminded the spotter. "Okay, ten to go."
"Five, four, three, two, one. Right on your sign, right on your sign."
"I'd rather have a fast pit stop than a rubber out," Mikey commented during the long stop.
"All the way, all the way, all the way," Paul guided him out of the box.
"41," Mark added. "Okay, Mike, it's going to be one to go when you get here. One to go."
Racing resumed on lap 42 with Earnhardt Jr in the lead. Mikey was 32nd, David was 26th, and Dale was 28th. All three were lapped.
"Still outside," Mark warned after the restart. "Still out there. Clear high behind the 20 if you need it. Still clear, still clear high. Clear all around. Still outside. Clear behind the 20 if you need it."
Mikey was 30th on lap 45.
"Still out there. Got more lined up on the outside," the spotter continued. "Still out there. Clear behind the 48 if you need it. 42 outside. 17 following the 42. Clear by six behind the 17."
Matt Kenseth's pass on lap 47 moved the #55 back to 31st. Mikey was 32nd one lap later.
"Looking inside, inside. Clear all around. Clear by two, back... inside, inside. Clear, clear all around. 43 inside. Clear by five back to the 7."
Mikey was 33rd on lap 49.
"Still out there - 38," Mark warned. "Still outside. Clear by three, back to the 15. Clear high if you need it. Clear by one. Clear, clear all around."
On lap 53, Mikey was 32nd, having passed David Gilliland's #38.
"Clear all around," said Mark. "Clear by three on the 7. He's running on the top, making a little ground. Still clear by three. Got a run on you here. Clear by one. Gonna be outside - 7 car. Clear by one, back to the 16. He's got a run on top. Outside. Clear, clear by one. Got a run back on the outside. Clear all around, clear by three back to the 15."
Lap 59 saw the #55 in 33rd, following Robby Gordon's pass. One lap later, Kyle Busch passed Earnhardt Jr for the lead.
"Twenty laps on your tires, twenty," Paul said. He noted that Mikey's times were a little better.
"Clear by eight on the 15," Mark added.
"The car's worse," Mikey reported on lap 66.
"10-4."
"It's been loose in all day. It's looser in, tighter off." He then changed his mind. "It's looser in, it's better off."
Mikey was 33rd on lap 67. David was 24th, and Dale was 30th.
"Clear by four to the 83. He's running on the top," Mark stated. "83 got a run here. One back. He's by himself. Clear behind him."
"It's just too tight up top," Mikey commented on lap 73.
"15 inside," Mark noted. "Still there, still there. Clear all around. Clear, clear."
On lap 74, Mikey got around Jamie McMurray for position; McMurray made a stop under green.
"Leader at the line... now.
"Clear by four, back to the 18. He is the leader. Got a run up on top, half back. Outside. Clear behind him. Clear by four, back to the 28," Mark added. Mikey fell a second lap down on lap 79. "Looking outside, outside. New tires right there. 28 one back. Clear all around."
Kvapil's pass on lap 82 moved the #55 back to 33rd.
"How about some lap times?" Mikey asked. "I don't know why y'all don't give me lap times."
"10-4. About twenty-four laps til we pit. Twenty-four," Paul replied.
"Clear all around. Caution's out, caution's out. Got debris on the race track."
The second caution was on lap 84 for debris in Turn 3. Paul Menard received the free pass.
"It's just so unbalanced. I backed into the corner, and I just plow off. Man, I can't do nothing about it," Mikey complained.
"10-4. Did we make the loose in worst just then?" Paul asked.
"No, it's about the same. I wish y'all would get into the game a little bit. Tell me how I'm running, tell me where the leaders are running."
"I wasn't saying it, because you told Mark to shut up."
"I told Mark to shut up, because I was running three-wide, and he kept saying it," Mikey replied. He reiterated needing lap times. "You need to make a major adjustment. I'm loose in, and I'm loose off. Talk to me."
Paul said he'd let air out of both front tires and mentioned the wedge adjustment he'd made earlier.
"4100 at the line," Mark noted. "Ten to go."
"Five, four, three, two, one. Right on your sign, right on your sign," Paul guided the #55 to the box. "Get in the gas. All the way, all the way, all the way, all the way. Good, good."
"Good job, y'all. Good stop," Mikey praised.
"10-4."
"Be one to go this time. One to go," Mark noted. "I won't say nothing on the start. You can see what you're doing."
Kyle Busch led the restart on lap 90. Mikey was 31st and two laps down. David and Dale were 25th and 30th, both lapped.
"Clear by one to the 11. Inside, inside. He's by himself. Clear behind him. Clear by six, back to the 88. Clear by one. Coming inside, inside. Clear behind him, clear by six, clear all around."
"31.60," Paul read off the lap time.
"Clear by three, back to the 29. Inside, inside. Clear by six behind him. 24 got a run up on top. Clear by two. Clear by one. Inside, inside. Clear by six behind him."
"32.20."
"07 half back. Looking inside. Clear by eight behind him. Clear by four back to the 99. Looking inside, inside. Clear by eight behind him. Still clear by eight."
"Last lap, 33 flat, this lap 32.90."
"Clear by four, back to the 01 car."
"32.80."
"Clear by three. Looking inside, inside. Clear by eight behind him."
"10-4. 33.10."
"Still clear by six, back to the 17."
"33.20."
"Clear by... two to the 17. He's been running up top. Looking inside, inside. Clear by three, back to the 28. Clear all around. Clear by three behind the 28 to the 31. Looking inside, inside. Clear all around, clear by four back to the 66."
Mikey was 32nd on lap 106 after Kvapil's pass.
"Clear by three, back to the 42."
"33.50."
"Looking outside, outside," Mark warned. "Outside, clear by fifteen behind him."
"I'm just so loose, I messed up the car," Mikey commented on lap 108.
"10-4," Paul replied.
"The front end's better, the back's worse."
"10-4, 33.50."
"Clear by ten on the 48," Mark spotted.
"33.70," Paul read off lap times. "33.80."
"Clear by five on the 38. Inside, inside. Clear by eight behind him. Caution's out, caution's out. Got a crash on the front. Caution's out."
The third caution was on lap 114. Kasey Kahne got loose off Turn 4 and spun on the frontstretch.
"That wedge has made me so loose. I think it's the wedge," Mikey reported.
Paul said they'd go two up on the left rear and adjust air pressure. He said he'd also fix that wedge.
Mikey said he wanted to go down by four.
"Three down, four, four down right rear," Paul determined. He said he would go all with the same side.
"I just, as soon as I turn left, I totally go sideways, and that's when it's still going straight. It felt like California, I mean Vegas, but it's not enough to get into trouble... too much trouble. Then, as soon as I get into the corner, it's fine... fine off. But I can't get near the corner."
Paul said they'd put in left front air that they took out before. "Still should be a clear pit in."
The #55 pit under caution. Greg Biffle was in the lead, having stayed on track.
"Get it hard, hard, hard, hard," Paul coached his driver off pit road. "Oh yeah, you got him. He's still beside you."
"One car inside, inside," Mark warned.
Mikey was coming out of his pit stall when another car came out of its box and pushed him toward the grass. It was David in the Aaron's Dream Machine.
"Be one to go when you get here. One to go."
Kyle Busch led the lap 118 restart. Mikey was 31st, David was 22nd, and Dale was 27th.
"Okay, pace car's off. Ready? Ready? Green green green," Mark guided. "Still outside. One car outside. Still outside - 41. Outside. Clear behind the 41 by three. Still out there. 99 outside. 48 outside, outside. Clear behind the 48.
"Still inside," Mark continued. "Lined up inside. Clear, clear by half back to the 77. 77 inside. Clear by one back to the 6. Inside. Clear all around, clear by half back to the 16. Outside. Clear high behind the 16. Clear all around. Clear by one back to the 43. Inside. Clear, clear all around. Clear by three on the 66."
"32.90, last two laps," Paul noted.
"Inside, inside. Clear all around. 83 got a run on top. Clear by half. Outside. 17 one back from him, looking outside. Clear by ten behind the 17 if you need it."
"33.60, last two laps.
"33.60."
"15 back by one, got a little run, half. Inside, inside. Clear behind the 15 by five," Mark said. "9 car inside. Clear by four, back to the 7 car."
Mikey was 33rd on lap 133 after Kasey Kahne's wounded #9 got around the #55.
"It's backing into the corner so bad, I can't drive it," Mikey complained after the pass.
"10-4," Paul replied. "33.50.
"33.50."
"7 got a little run up on top, one back. Outside. Clear behind him by six to the 44."
"33.70.
"33.70."
"Leader at the line now," Mark noted.
"33.75."
Mikey was 32nd on lap 141.
"33.75."
"44 quarter panel. Inside, inside. Clear behind him," Mark noted. "Clear by six, back to the 8 car."
"34.20.
"34.10.
"34.10.
"33.75.
"34 flat."
"Looking inside. Still clear, still clear," Mark said. "Inside, inside. Clear by ten behind him if you need it. Leader is thirty car lengths back."
Kyle Busch's #18 hit the wall around lap 150 and bent frame housing.
"I'm as loose as I've ever been," Mikey complained.
"10-4," Paul replied. "34.10."
On lap 152, Clint Bowyer took the lead.
"Clear by four, back to the 96 car," Mark stated. "Clear by five. Leader's ten back. Got one car between you. Clear by six, back to the 07. He is the leader. Clear by four. He is running on the bottom. Inside, by himself. Clear by five, back to the 19. He's a lap down."
Lap 154 saw Mikey go a third lap down.
"Outside," Mark warned. "Second place car coming outside, half back. Clear by three back to the 96, lap down."
Elliott Sadler passed, moving the #55 to 33rd on lap 156.
"34.20," Paul said.
"Looking inside, inside. Got the 41 back, running on the top. Still clear, still clear. Half back," Mark guided. "Outside. Clear by ten behind him."
On lap 159, Dario Franchitti passed. Mikey was now 34th.
"Y'all, I've never felt anything like this," the driver commented.
"10-4, 10-4. We're going to make some more big changes here," Paul replied.
"Looking inside, 3rd place car. Looking inside, clear behind him. Inside, inside. By himself. Clear by eight behind him."
"34.45, last two laps."
"99 four back. Outside, outside. Clear behind him. Clear by ten."
Jimmie Johnson pit on lap 163 as the first to make a planned green flag stop. Others made stops, moving the #55 up to 33rd.
"Still clear by ten," Mark said.
"We're almost ready for a pit stop, almost ready," Paul told his driver on lap 166.
"Clear by four, back to the 24 car. Lead lap car. Got a run up on top, one back. Outside. Clear by ten behind him."
Bowyer pit on lap 168, giving the lead to Carl Edwards.
"The 24's going to be stopping here any time. Just watch him," Mark warned.
"All right, let's pit the next time," Paul told his driver. "Let's pit the next time by."
"Clear by ten behind you. Got a lot of room."
Edwards pit on lap 169, giving the lead to Jeff Gordon. Mikey came in at the same time, and Paul guided him to his box.
"All the way, all the way out. All clear."
"41, 41," Mark added.
Stops cycled on lap 170, and Bowyer was back in the lead. Mikey was 35th, three laps down.
"Got a group coming outside, outside. 88. Clear behind the 88 by six. Clear all around," said the spotter. David was 6th, having yet to make a stop. Dale was 20th and one lap down.
"32.60," Paul read off lap times.
"20 car two back," Mark warned. "20 car outside. Got a run up up top. Outside. Clear behind him."
By lap 174, Mikey was 33rd and three laps down. David was 21st and lapped, and Dale was two laps down in 28th.
"32.80.
"32.50."
"Pulling away from what's behind you," Mark said on lap 177.
"32.75."
"Clear."
"32.90.
"33.10."
"Clear all around."
"33.30," Paul continued. "33.20. The 9 car for position is coming back to you. 33.10."
"Clear by ten, back to the 8 car. Pulling away."
"33.30."
"45 car's pretty slow there on the bottom," Mark warned. "Clear."
"33 flat.
"33.40."
"Clear the 38," Mark observed.
"33.30.
"33.50.
"33.50."
"Clear by twelve on that 48."
"33.70."
"Clear."
"33.60.
"33.50.
"33.50.
"33.45."
"Leader at the line now," Mark warned.
The yellow flag waved on lap 198. Brian Vickers in 12th received the free pass.
"Caution's out, caution's out. Got debris on the front," Mark reported.
"That was a little better, but it still does the same thing," Mikey told his crew chief.
"10-4, 10-4. We'll do some more of that, we'll do some more of that," was Paul's reply. "Before this last adjustment, I was thinking of putting rubber in the right rear, but I'm afraid to screw it up."
"I would go with what you just did. It's still effed up, but it's better. I still can't get into the corner at all."
Mark told them pit road was opened, and they'd come in the next time around.
"You might try to clean the grill a little bit. It's running about 220," Mikey suggested.
"All right, 10-4. It will be a clear pit in, a clear pit in," Paul replied. "96 will be here. 96 will already be here."
"41, 41. Ten to go," Mark said.
"Five, four, three, two, one. Right on your sign, right on your sign." After the stop, Paul guided him out. "All the way, all the way."
"Okay, Mike. It will be one to go when you get here," Mark told his driver. Meanwhile, Reed Sorenson sat on pit road with the hood up on his #41 Target Dodge.
Clint Bowyer led the restart on lap 204. Mikey was 31st, three laps down. David and Dale were two laps down in 21st and 26th respectively.
"Still inside," Mark warned. "Clear low. Clear all around. Clear by three, back to the 78. Still clear by four with the 78."
Kasey Kahne passed two laps into the run; Mikey was now 32nd. The #55 got back around the #9 the next time around the track.
Mark told his driver that the #83 was looking to pass. "Good corner there. Clear by five. Clear, clear."
With Sorenson's misfortunes, Mikey picked up 30th on lap 210. Meanwhile, Busch was back in the lead.
"32.50," Paul read off the lap time.
"11 car just looking. Still clear. Inside, inside. 11 car. 83 inside. Clear, clear all around."
"32.80."
"9 car looking inside. Clear. Still out there, still there. Clear, clear. Looking inside, inside. Clear. Clear by four, back to the ten."
Kahne passed him back on lap 212.
"It's worse in. I'm going to crash, man," Mikey complained on lap 215.
"83 three back. He's running up top. Two back."
"33.10."
"Clear by three. Looking inside, inside. Clear by ten behind him if you need it."
"It's just... this is just a bad adjustment. It pushes up in the centre," Mikey said on lap 219.
"Okay," Paul replied. "10-4."
The fifth caution was on lap 220. Elliott Sadler spun in Turn 4. Greg Biffle received the free pass.
"Now, it's skating through the centre. This is way worse," Mikey reported. "You've got to do something more else than this. Alls you did this time was make it slide through the centre. It's just as bad backing into the corner. If I was you, I'd put eight rounds in the right front... take eight rounds out of the right front. it does not drive like a normal car at all. We've got to do something with that bump stop. I am not driving it for the third frickin' week in a row."
Paul suggested an adjustment he said htey
"Can't you do it with wedge? Can't you do it with springs?"
Paul said loading up the left rear made it worse.
Mikey said undo what they did and don't do anything if they didn't know what to do with it.
Paul wanted to put rubber in the right rear. "Go ahead and get that rubber, guys. Go get that rubber and put it in the left rear."
"What happened, Mark?" Mikey asked.
"Some car hit the wall. I didn't see the number," Mark replied.
"I wouldn't know any difference whether I was at Vegas, California, or here, if that tells you anything about what we've got going on with our package. It feels exactly the same."
"Yeah, 10-4, that does tell us something."
"Well I wish that would have told you something after Vegas. It just keeps hanging on."
"10-4."
Mikey was guided into his box. Paul apologised for losing his driver, who then asked if his splitter were okay. Brian Vickers led a lap under caution.
"It's gotten worse all day. We're just hurting ourselves with our adjustments. We probably ought to put the rubber back in the right rear," Mikey commented.
"Okay, 10-4. We'll just see how this does here," Paul replied.
"How many laps is the 41 down?" Mikey asked.
"He's on our lap, he's on our lap. Three down."
"What about the 01?"
"He's one lap behind us. Our cars are 9, 28, 40, 41, 19."
The restart came on lap 225 with Kyle Busch in the lead. Mikey was 32nd, three laps down. David and Dale were two laps down in 22nd and 25th.
"Clear all around," Mark said. "Clear high."
Ryan Newman pit from fifth place with a tremendous right side tire rub.
"Got a little smoke up in front of you. It's just a little tire rub," Mark told his driver. "Clear by four on the 16. He just got his lap back. Looking inside. Quarter panel. Inside. Clear, clear all around. Still outside, still out there. 16 following on the outside. Clear all around behind the 16. Clear of the 40. Still outside."
Mikey passed Dario Franchitti for 31st on lap 230.
"Clear, clear," Mark said. "Still outside. 78 still out there. Clear, clear. Clear high, clear high."
"32.60."
"Clear by six. Caution's out, caution's out. Got one behind us spinning out."
The sixth caution was on lap 232 for Sadler. Johnson received the free pass.
"Still killer loose in. No different. Better in the centre, better off. Let's go ahead and do that, put that right rear rubber in it, and put on some tires with maybe air pressure adjustment. Maybe go up on both rears a little bit. I'm just desperate out here. I definitely want tires, maybe a little bit left front air and right front rubber."
Paul said the air was what they just changed, because that had given then trouble during the last adjustment.
Mikey acknowledged that. "Maybe the rubber in the right rear."
The #55 pit during the quickie yellow.
"Okay, all the way out, all the way out," Paul guided.
"Okay, Mike. When you get back, it will be one to go," Mark told his driver.
Kyle Busch led the lap 235 restart. Mikey was 31st, three laps down. David and Dale were two laps down in 23rd and 26th. Mike Skinner passed Dale's #44 one lap into the run.
"Clear all around," Mark said. "Still out there. 96 coming with you. Clear right there. Outside, outside. Still out there. Still out there. Clear by three behind him if you need it. Still outside, still out there. Clear high. Still outside, still outside. Inside. Clear low, clear low."
On lap 240, Carl Edwards took the lead.
"This is way worse," Mikey reported.
"Looking inside, inside," Mark continued. "Clear, clear. Still outside, still there. Outside. Three-wide, you're on the bottom. Two-wide. Still outside. Got one more coming up high. Clear all around. Clear by ten. Three-wide, you're on the bottom. Two-wide. 22 still there. Clear the 22, clear high. Still outside. Still out there."
"I'm just so loose. It's just, I don't know. Feels like air pressure this time," Mikey said on lap 246.
"10-4," Paul replied and gave lap times. "33.05.
"33.20.
"33.40.
"33.40.
"33.40."
"Clear," said Mark.
"33.40."
"Three-wide, you're on the bottom. Two-wide, still outside. Clear all around. 83 inside, inside. Clear behind him there."
"33.70."
"Still there. Clear behind him."
"33.60.
"33.80."
"44 inside," Mark noted. "Clear all around."
"33.80.
"33.70."
Sadler spun again and put his nose in the wall, drawing the seventh caution on lap 262. The leader was a straightaway behind Mikey when the yellow flag waved for the third time in a row for the #19. Jimmie Johnson received the free pass.
"That's the worst it's been, the worst it's been. It's really bad. The worst it's been," Mikey said. "Take everyting out of the left rear, and put the air back in not like the last run but the one before."
"That's where I am right now. Both halves out of the left rear," Paul replied.
"Take some out of the left rear maybe."
Paul said they put pressure in it earlier that day.
Leaders pit under caution. Bobby Labonte led a lap when others made stops.
"Clear pit in, clear pit in. This time. Four tires," Paul said.
"41 at the line," Mark reminded. "Ten to go."
"Five, four, three, two, one. Right on your sign, right on your sign," Paul directed. "Beside you, beside you. Go all the way out, go all the way out."
"This light don't work," Mikey reported.
"Okay, 10-4."
"Man, I love an old, rough, slick track," Mikey commented. "You can really have fun, but I can't. I don't know what's going on. I just can't predict what my car's going to do."
"Yeah, 10-4. It's definitely been a struggle," Paul replied.
"We haven't done anything. Yesterday, it wasn't loose in during practice at all. I got in, I passed David. It felt good," Mikey continued. "I've never one time been able to get into the corner."
"Was there a reason to top off there?"
"No, we're still pretty short. Not for that little bit. We're ten laps short."
"Okay."
Racing resumed on lap 267. Carl Edwards led. Mikey was 31st, three laps down. David and Dale were 22nd and 28th, both two laps down. Kyle Busch passed for the lead, but Edwards took it back the next time around the track.
"Still outside," Mark warned. "Clear all around, clear all around. 48 up on top. Outside, outside. 78 half back. Outside. 78 still there. Clear behind him if you need it. 78 still there. 10 two back from him. Clear right there. Clear all around. 10 outside. Clear, clear all around. Clear all around."
Edwards smoked throughout the run, and it got significantly worse on lap 273. Edwards went to pit road with 50 to go. Kyle Busch was back in the lead.
"This has made the front end much better," Mikey commented.
"10-4," Paul replied.
"Still there," Mark warned. "Clear by two, back to the 22."
"32.25. 33.25.
"33.40."
Mikey was 30th on lap 279. "I like these pressures. Real, real smoot," he commented. "Maybe just some wedge with these pressures."
"10-4," Paul replied. "33.20."
"Still clear by one on the 22," said Mark.
"33.30."
"Caution's out, caution's out."
Lap 282 saw the eighth caution for liquid debris. Kurt Busch received the free pass.
"These pressures are really, really good in the front. It makes my car drive good. It turns frickin' loose, way loose. I think we could leave these pressures... y'all know what you're doing. I'm so loose, I can't hang on. But the front end is good, if we can get the back a little better."
Paul wanted to go up on the track bar one turn. He said they'd put some wedge in it and see what happens.
"You don't listen, apparently. It's been loose in the front end all day. Now I can feel my tires, but I'm loose in the front like I've been all day." He asked Paul to listen to him and to help him out. "The front end is good. That's all I know to tell you."
"Pit road will be open this time. We'll have to wait one more," Mark told his driver. Leaders pit under caution.
"Might ought to wipe the grill. The pressure's at 240," Mikey requested.
"4100 at the line. Ten to go."
"Five, four, three, two, one. Right on your sign, right on your sign," Paul guided. He told the crew to get a little extra gas. "All the way around. Good good good."
"Going to be one to go this time, Mike. One to go. When we get the green, we'll have 37 to go," Mark stated.
"Did y'all get the grill?" Mikey asked.
"10-4," Paul replied.
Lap 287 saw the restart. Kyle Busch led, Mikey was three laps down in 30th, David was 21st, and Dale was 26th.
"Clear high, clear high," Mark said. "Clear by four. Still there. Clear by half. Clear. Clear all around."
"32.10."
"Clear by four."
"32.20."
"Still clear by three on the 22. Still there. Clear, clear."
"32.70. Last two laps.
"32.80.
"33 flat.
"33.10."
"Clear high, clear high," said Mark. "Clear by four."
On lap 301, Mikey passed Travis Kvapil for 29th.
"25 to go this time," the spotter noted. "25."
"33.15."
"Looking inside, inside. 40 car. Clear, clear. Still clear. Clear all around."
"The 40 is not on our lap," Paul noted of the car four laps down. "The next one on our lap is the 9."
"Clear by half on the 22," Mark added. "Inside, inside. Got the 2 up high. Got a run on you. Clear low. Outside. 2 car by himself. Clear all around. Clear by four back to the 28."
"We are racing the 28. You're doing good off him."
"15's looking inside, inside. Clear all around, clear by two back to the 28. 7 car one back. Outside, outside. Clear high. 28 inside. Still inside. Clear all around, clear by two back to the 96."
Mikey was 30th on lap 308 after Kvapil got back around him.
"Clear by two, back to the 44."
"33.80."
"15 to go this time, 15. Clear by five."
"33.75.
"33.80."
"Clear by eight, back to the 96."
"34 flat."
"Clear by one."
"33.80."
"Still clear by two."
"33.80."
"Still clear by one. He's looking inside, inside. Clear by eight, back to the 44. Ten to go this time. Ten."
"34.30.
"34 flat.
"34 flat.
"34.05."
"Leader's twenty back. Still got two cars between you," Mark warned. "Clear by two on the 01. He's running on the top."
"34.40."
"Still clear, still clear. Still clear by three. Five to go this time."
"33.80."
"01 two back. Got a little run here. Inside, inside. By himself. Clear low. Clear by two back to the 44. Leader's one behind him. 44 looking inside, inside. Inside. Leader right behind the 44. Inside. Got a ten car length hole behind the leader. Inside. Three to go this time. Three."
Mikey went a fourth lap down. Kyle Busch moved Dale out of the way on the final lap, putting him a third lap down.
"One more time here," Mark said. "One more time. Inside. Inside, 84 car. Second place car one back from you. Inside. Third place car one back on the outside. Stay in the middle there. Stay in the middle. Coming to the checkered. Stay low. Coming to the checkered."
"That was really, really, really, really loose," Mikey said after Kyle Busch picked up the first Cup win for Toyota. "Really, really, really, really loose. We got some wicked loose cars that you can't drive. Really loose."
"10-4. Yeah, that's bad."
"No shit. I think we got good motors. We just don't know how to set them up. It's a shame, but we'll keep working. I feel like I raced the best race of my life not wrecking it for three weeks. I don't know what else I can do."
"Man, I understand."
Mikey finished 30th, four laps down. David was 20th, two laps down, and Dale was three laps down in 26th.
Next week is the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. Coverage starts Sunday at 1:30pm ET. The Nationwide Series race runs the day before. The Sharpie Mini 300 will air on ABC at 2:00pm.
