David 40th in BGN Daytona race by Kellyanne Lynch
7 July 2007
David Reutimann's Michael Waltrip Racing entry was wrecked out of the Winn Dixie 250, this morning's Busch Series race at Daytona International Speedway. Steve Wallace's #66 cut down a tire on lap 51, bounced off the wall, and slammed across the nose of the #99 Aaron's Dream Machine. David finished 40th.
The Busch Series' Winn Dixie 250 was scheduled to take place last night, but due to rain, NASCAR postponed the start until 9:00am ET this morning. Cars rolled off pit road approximately fifteen minutes later.
Jason Leffler led the field to the green flag at 9:21am ET. Clint Bowyer pushed Kevin Harvick into the lead along the backstretch. Meanwhile, David got around Reed Sorenson for 10th. As lines moved, he was marked in 13th on lap 2 and back to 10th on lap 3. By lap 6, he was 7th. The first four ran nose to tail while David ran two-wide along the inside line. Lap 9 saw him get shuffled back to 12th. He was 15th the next time around the track and 16th one circuit after that.
Clint Bowyer took the lead on lap 14. Harvick, who was loose, dropped to the back until he could stop and make a change.
NASCAR brought out a competition caution on lap 20. Because the rain yesterday washed the rubber off the track, the sanctioning body allowed teams to adjust for the changes to the track's surface. David was 15th when he pit under yellow. Scott Wimmer's #29 stalled. His crew pushed the car to the end of pit road but had to push it back to their box when the #29 did not refire.
Kyle Busch, who passed through the grass while exiting pit road, led the lap 24 restart. David was 14th. Aric Almirola dropped through the ranks. Kyle Krisiloff had hit him on pit road. Almirola sustained damage and missed his pit box. On lap 26, Mike Bliss got loose and hit the wall. David was 15th by then but was up to 13th the next time around the track.
Bowyer was back in the lead on lap 29. David was running 14th. He dropped to 16th the next time around the track and 18th one circuit later. Passing David Gilliland on lap 32 gained him a spot, and he picked up another position on the next lap. David was back to 18th on lap 35 and 17th one circuit later.
Kyle Busch dropped under Bowyer and moved into the lead for lap 40. David was now 15th, 17th by lap 44.
David was in the wreck that brought out the second caution on lap 51. Steven Wallace had problems with his tire and stayed on track along the high line until he shot up the track. He bounced off the wall and into the nose of the Aaron's Dream Machine. David's #99 sustained significant damage. He went to the garage and was marked as off. The #99 team ultimately determined that they would not be able to get that car back on the track.
Be sure to watch David and Dale tonight in the Nextel Cup race! Coverage starts at 6:30pm ET on TNT.

With the banking here at Daytona did you see the No. 66 (Steven Wallace) spinning in front of you?
"I saw him starting to spin, and I knew that he was going to come to the bottom because of the way this place is with the banking. I had already committed to the bottom and I just couldn't get away from him."
How will the race this morning affect tonight's race?
"It's going to be dark tonight, so the track will be a little cooler. Right now it's pretty slick, but we shouldn't have been in the spot we were to begin with. When you run in the middle of the pack, you get caught up in stuff, and that's what happened."
