David 33rd in BGN Bristol race by Kellyanne Lynch
24 March 2007
Michael Waltrip Racing's David Reutimann finished 33rd in the Sharpie Mini 300, today's Busch Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway. His #99 Aaron's Dream Machine was spun two-thirds into the race and spent sixty-three laps in the garage getting a new radiator. The #99 returned with just over ten laps left in the race.
"I hadn't gotten into anybody all day," David said after the accident. "I hadn't put a scratch on the car. Then the No. 77 car just tagged me from behind. I don't know what happened or why. It's just pretty disappointing. But that's kind of been the way our season has gone so far. We'll just have to regroup and keep digging. We were running okay before the wreck, but we still weren't anywhere near as good as we were yesterday. We had made some gains on it, but we were still pretty far off. I think we would have been able to get a pretty decent finish today, but we're not going to have that chance now."
The race began shortly after 3:00pm ET. Pole-sitter Steve Wallace led the field to the green flag. He led the first thirty-two laps before Carl Edwards took over the top spot. The first forty laps saw three cautions.
Edwards led the lap 44 restart, and David was 20th. The #99 maintained that position through the run.
The yellow flag waved for the fourth time on lap 57 when Kyle Krisiloff spun independently and collected Steve Wallace.
Racing resumed on lap 65 with Edwards leading. David ran 18th; he had gained two spots due to pit stops. By lap 74, the Aaron's Dream Machine had passed Juan Pablo Montoya for 17th. Nine laps later, Johnny Sauter booted David in the rear. Sauter and Jason Leffler passed, dropping the #99 to 19th. Lap 102 saw Kasey Kahne's #9 get around the Aaron's Camry.
At the front of the field, Edwards got caught in lapped traffic. Kyle Busch passed along the high side and took the lead on lap 104. Meanwhile, David slipped to 21st.
The leader spun, drawing the fifth caution on lap 108. Kyle Busch was trying to pass Todd Kluever on the low side, got loose, and with a nudge from Kluever's #16, he spun. Cars pit under yellow.
Kasey Kahne led the lap 117 restart, but he fell back immediately and lost the top spot to Carl Edwards. David was 22nd. He had gained a spot when the yellow flag waved again two laps later.
The sixth caution was for a five-car wreck. Aric Almirola drove his #20 into the side of Bobby Labonte, causing a pile-up that involved twelve cars. Five sustained significant damage. David was one of the twelve; his #99 picked up some rear and front damage due to the accordian effect that was in the #20's wake.
Edwards led the restart on lap 128 with David running 14th. Four laps into the run, Kyle Busch's #5 reclaimed the top spot.
Lap 137 saw the seventh caution for an accident involving Jason Leffler and Shane Huffman.
Racing resumed on lap 152 with Busch in the lead and David in 12th. Six laps into the run, the yellow flag waved for the eighth time. Clint Bowyer's lead lap car was stuck behind Reagan Smith's lapped #4, and Bowyer spun him.
The field returned to green on lap 163. Busch led, and David ran 12th. David Gilliland smoked to pit road on lap 177.
The Aaron's Dream Machine spun on lap 181 when Bobby Labonte turned the #99 into the wall; David had just waved him by. Over the radio, the #99 team talked about needing a radiator. Commentator Rusty Wallace said that David had been struggling with handling all day and usually runs out front at Bristol.
David returned to the race on lap 288 and was 62 laps down. He finished an additional lap down while Carl Edwards went on to win.
Tomorrow, Michael Waltrip Racing driver Dale Jarrett will compete in the Nextel Cup's Food City 500. Coverage begins at 1:30pm ET on FOX.
