David Reutimann picked up a top fifteen finish for Michael Waltrip Racing in the Telcel-Motorola Mexico 200, today's Busch Series race at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. He finished 12th in his #99 Aaron's Dream Machine.
The call to start engines came at 2:13pm ET. Although he qualified 25th, David had to go to the back of the pack during the pace laps with an engine change. The race started seventeen minutes later.
Pole-sitter Scott Pruett led the field to the stripe. He pulled in front of Carlos Contreras to solidify his leave, and Juan Pablo Montoya passed Contreras' #22 for position. David was up to 30th after the first lap, and he gained another spot one circuit later. Meanwhile, PJ Jones made a pit stop. Other drivers came in early, within the next few laps.
Montoya moved inside his teammate in Turn 1 of Lap 3, and with a little contact, he took the top spot. Four laps later, David moved into 28th. J. R. Fitzpatrick Jr spun his #0 on lap 8. The spin drew a local caution, but racing continued. As the #0 and others made stops, David advanced to 26th by lap 9, 22nd the next time around the track, and 20th one lap later.
Carlos Contrares took the lead on lap 11 during stops. He waved by Denny Hamlin, allowing the #20 to take first. Contrares then missed the entrance to pit road.
Meanwhile, David was now 13th, and he pit at the end of lap 12. Hamlin was headed for pit road too but missed the entrance. At the front of the field, Jorges Goeters took the lead.
David was 35th on lap 13, after his stop. Goeters pit at the end of the lap, while Scott Wimmer's #29 pit with a flat tire. German Quiroga Jr led by lap 17, and David was 32nd. The #99 advanced to 30th the next time around the track.
The first full-course yellow came out on lap 23 for Antonio Perez's #68, after Scott Pruett spun him into the grass. Many drivers made stops, and David was one of them.
Racing resumed on lap 26 with Montoya leading. David was 26th, but he gained two spots in the next two laps. He was up to 23rd by lap 33.
Ron Fellows pit on lap 40 with a potential valve spring failure, allowing David to move into 22nd. The #99 gained another spot when PJ Jones made a stop. A couple other drivers pit, advancing David to 19th on lap 42 and 17th on lap 43. The next time around the track, he was 15th.
David was 11th on lap 45 when he and race leader Montoya pit. Greg Biffle led for one lap before he made his stop, and Stephen Leicht took first.
Meanwhile, Montoya got less fuel than he wanted, because the hose on their fuel can broke. While he now led, he would have to pit again. David was now 25th. He picked up a spot from Kyle Krisiloff one lap later.
Todd Souza spun, drawing the second full-course caution on lap 52. Montoya was able to pick up more fuel under yellow; he and a few other drivers made stops.
Lap 55 saw the restart with Scott Pruett leading. David was 24th. One lap into the run, he gained spots to Contrares and Goeters. By lap 61, David dropped back to 23rd.
Brad Coleman spun into the grass, drawing the third full-course caution on lap 61. Racing resumed two laps later with Pruett leading and David in 22nd.
The yellow flag waved again for the fourth time on lap 63 when JJ Yeley and Marcos Ambrose spun across the track.
Racing resumed on lap 68. Pruett led, and David was 20th. The caution returned moments later for a crash involving David Gilliland, JJ Yeley, and Michel Jordain Jr.
Pruett led the field back to the stripe with ten laps to go. David was 19th. On lap 72, Montoya ran low into Turn 1 and spun out his teammate. Other cars were collected, and the yellow flag returned.
Lap 75 saw the restart with Montoya leading and David running 15th. On the next lap, the seventh caution came out when Scott Pruett tapped the back of Shane Huffman's #88.
Racing resumed with two laps to go. Montoya led the field, and David was 16th. Due to a tailpipe on the track, the yellow flag returned. Drivers prepared for a green-white-checkered finish, and David was 16th coming to the green. In two laps, the #99 gained four spots and finished in 12th. Montoya went on to win the race.
