Chip Ganassi, owner of the Dodges driven in the Nextel Cup Series by Reed Sorenson, David Stremme and Casey Mears, said he looks for Toyota to be a strong competitor in Cup next season even though the three teams it announced on Tuesday aren't among the sport's dominant forces this year.
Bill Davis Racing hasn't won a Cup race since 2002. Michael Waltrip Racing has very limited Cup experience, and Red Bull Racing is new to Nextel Cup.
Ganassi pointed out that when Toyota entered the Craftsman Truck Series two years ago, it started with owners who had little or no experience in truck racing. But now, Toyota trucks are strong in that division, having won nine races and 13 poles last season after winning four races and five poles in its first year on the circuit.
"[Toyota] will do it right no matter who they're with," Ganassi said during a teleconference with reporters on Wednesday.
