Michael Waltrip, a two-time Daytona 500 Champion, made an appearance Thursday at the "Back the Track Night" at the Tacoma Dome in Washington. Waltrip greeted fans and signed autographs as part of the "Back the Track" night being held to rally supporters of the proposal being put forth by NASCAR to develop a motorsports facility in Kitsap County.
Some of the hottest drivers from NASCAR and the Indy Racing League, including Kasey Kahne, Greg Biffle, Darrell Waltrip, Johnny Rutherford, Paul Dana and Sam Hornish Jr, attended the ‘Back the Track’ event signing autographs and meeting race fans from the Pacific Northwest. Kahne and Biffle, who are both from the state of Washington, were especially popular with the fans and spoke fondly of racing on local tracks during the early parts of their careers.
But the night was highlighted by an on-stage interview with Waltrip, Biffle and Rutherford. Michael Waltrip, when asked about his favorite race victory of all time answered, “the 2003 Daytona 500.” But then added that, “the best thing about winning was knowing Kurt Busch didn’t win”. The comment received a big cheer from the large crowd of NASCAR fans in attendance.
Waltrip also said his new Bill Davis Racing NAPA Auto Parts car would have a new paint job and be number 55.
